Craftsman or Artisan?

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of turn 8 oak table legs and in a conversation with John Moody, related a discussion he had with a lady about turning identical pieces.  She stated that a craftsman produces identical pieces but an artisan makes everything unique.  Look at the picture below.  From a distance I'm a craftsman but I'm really an artisan.

BTW, 2 down and 6 to go John.   The wood was air dried and not as stable as kiln dried oak.ning-004-12387-7.jpg?width=750

After turning all of the spindles for 3 cribs (66 spindles) and none of them were identical- I must certainly be an artisan ;^)

I am an artisan for sure.

Those look great though Ron. You goy them awful close to not use a duplicator. I'm impressed.

You might be a craftisian.

Ron, by that criteria, I am a super artisan. NONE of my box sides are alike. :-)

Ron,

Nice legs!

I readily use the term "One of a kind".  It helps discourage requests for duplicates which are impossible for a mere artisan. :)

I think you hit it on the head. An artisan creates the original and a craftsman duplicates it as close to the original as he, she or machine (CNC) can.

I think this would be a fitting sign in my shop:

Artisan at work - not a xerox.  Mention duplicates at your own risk.  LOL

Well, the turning is complete and I have put myself in the arisan category.  There are some slight differences in the legs but you really have to look.  BTW, if you have counted 9 legs in the picture you counted correctly.  Since I have to mortise all the legs I made an extra just in case.

Nice job Ron and you are fast too!

Those look really good. I still think you fit the craftisian.

Here are the culprits of the caper.  These new pieces of furniture are causing lots of work.  The old tables are too big.,  sigh.

Tell Dorothy I really like the new furniture. It looks awfully comfortable. I bet one could get a nice nap there.

I'm with John - GREAT idea - just might have to xerox it.  :)
