June 17, 201313 yr I'm in the process of turn 8 oak table legs and in a conversation with John Moody, related a discussion he had with a lady about turning identical pieces. She stated that a craftsman produces identical pieces but an artisan makes everything unique. Look at the picture below. From a distance I'm a craftsman but I'm really an artisan. BTW, 2 down and 6 to go John.  The wood was air dried and not as stable as kiln dried oak.  Â
June 17, 201313 yr After turning all of the spindles for 3 cribs (66 spindles) and none of them were identical- I must certainly be an artisan ;^)
June 17, 201313 yr I am an artisan for sure. Those look great though Ron. You goy them awful close to not use a duplicator. I'm impressed. You might be a craftisian.
June 17, 201313 yr Ron, Nice legs! Â I readily use the term "One of a kind". Â It helps discourage requests for duplicates which are impossible for a mere artisan. SQ
June 18, 201313 yr I think you hit it on the head. An artisan creates the original and a craftsman duplicates it as close to the original as he, she or machine (CNC) can.SQ said: Ron, Nice legs! June 19, 201313 yr I think this would be a fitting sign in my shop:Artisan at work - not a xerox. Â Mention duplicates at your own risk. Â LOLSQRobert Elliott said:I think you hit it on the head. June 19, 201313 yr Author Well, the turning is complete and I have put myself in the arisan category. There are some slight differences in the legs but you really have to look. BTW, if you have counted 9 legs in the picture you counted correctly. Since I have to mortise all the legs I made an extra just in case. Â
June 19, 201313 yr Author 66???? and you don't drink? Geesh, I'm impressed.Lewis Kauffman said:After turning all of the spindles for 3 cribs (66 spindles) and none of them were identical- I must certainly be an artisan ;^)

June 19, 201313 yr Nice job Ron and you are fast too! Those look really good. I still think you fit the craftisian.
June 20, 201313 yr Author Here are the culprits of the caper. These new pieces of furniture are causing lots of work. The old tables are too big., sigh.
June 21, 201313 yr Tell Dorothy I really like the new furniture. It looks awfully comfortable. I bet one could get a nice nap there.
June 21, 201313 yr I'm with John - GREAT idea - just might have to xerox it. Â SQ said: I think this would be a fitting sign in my shop: Artisan at work - not a xerox. Â Mention duplicates at your own risk. Â LOL SQRobert Elliott said:
