steven newman Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013  Ohio, that is.    Stark County town.  Anyway, a small box came in the mail today, inside it wasA collection of parts that seem to look like a #4 hand plane.   Stinky one, too.   Must have been barn fresh.  right down to the spider nests.   This might be .....fun.   Rusty, crusty, and Dusty!  The Three,,,,,,,amigos.   Took all the parts apart, and laid out the "remains"yep, even found another nest under the frog.  More about that so-called iron in a bit.  As for the rest of the pile of....Hmmm, when an adjuster wheel is rusty?   Mostly good parts, just need to spend so time uder a wire brush.  Got the base cleaned up, all the rust and other crud gone.   Along with most of the paint!    Just happen to have a can handy.   Sprayed the base down, and worked over the rest.   Bolts cleaned up nicely on the wire wheels, even the STEEL adjuster wheel.   Has to straighten out the lateral lever. . Went to work on the iron and chip breaker.  Chip breaker was thicker than the iron?  Iron was being bent by the chipbreaker.    Tried to flatten the back of the iron with just the belt sander.     Not happening.   Went to the grinder.   Got it almost flat.   Sent the iron to a honing guide, and a trip along the sanding belt.    Hmmm, passable, maybe. will know more after the stones get done. So how did this plane turn out?Well, I had a sparelever cap in the shop.   I also have a spare iron/chipbreaker, if needed. just a "no-name" #4?    cleans up like new?Other than S&H, this was $5.    Worth it?
John Moody Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Paris, hummm? Very nice. I guess they really don't need a name if they clean up good and you can sharpen the iron and make those thin ribbon you do so well. And at a bargain price to boot.
