June 28, 201313 yr  Had an old Ash tree cut down that died on us last year. Also got that big old Soft Maple branch that broke off early last year cut down. Ask the tree cutting guy to save me about 8 to 10 feet of both if all possible and to cut them about 3 ft long so I can handle them in re-sawing them into lumber.   Looks like I got about 12 ft of Ash and about 8 ft of Soft Maple. I have not got around to measure them yet been way too hot and not much time this week. Question is what is it that you put on end of logs and freshly cut boards to keep them from splitting? I was thinking of paint but back of my mind it call something different.Wayne EWayne E
June 28, 201313 yr WayneA lot of people including myself normally use a product called anchor seal. It seals the ends and allows the boards to dry at a slower rate preventing the checking and cracking. Hope this helps.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

June 28, 201313 yr IMMEDIATELY apply anything~!!!  I slather on latex paint, I HAVE also used several coats of Shellac because the alcohol binds to the water in the wood and it seals rather nicely. I've used roofing asphalt with great success. I have even stapled plastic sheet over the ends and that works too.The commercial product is Anchorseal.  I've never used it.

June 29, 201313 yr Oddly the one time I tried Weldwood (yes I thought that the polymer based adhesive would block water transpiration) it was a miserable failure.  I had some old weldwood that would have been tossed out coz it was lumpy and  gave it a try.I never reconciled myself to the failure because it made so much sense that it'd work. But it didn't.
