Friday, June 28th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda this Weekend?

Featured Replies

Here we are the weekend before the 4th of July.

It only seemed right when I was walking through a Antique store and saw this old hand plane that I get it. It must have been destiny. It was really hard to see but I was able to make out part of Stanley on the front and could make out 122 although I am not sure how.

ning-img-0656-11940-16.jpgThe front had something that looked almost like tar on it. Unless it got really hot somewhere and the original japanning ran down on the front I am not sure what this sticky mess really is.

ning-img-0653-11940-21.jpgIt was not in the best shape. Most of the original japanning was gone and there was some rust on the Iron part. But the lever worked.

ning-img-0652-11940-3.jpgSo if you haven't figured out yet, the Stanley No. 122 is the Liberty Bell plane. it was made to celebrate 100 years of Freedom. The were produced from 1877 till 1918. According to the markings on this one it appears to have been made in 1890. So as you see, for a plane of that age, I think it is in good shape and I really don't want it to look like a really new plane but like a plane from over 100 years ago.

So we will see what happens to it. I will probably clean it enough you can tell what it is.

So here we are getting ready to celebrate the 4th. I took a few minutes today and put new flowers on my dad's grave. A Marine who served in WWII in the Pacific theater. Thought these would be nice to have to celebrate his service.

ning-img-0766-11940-77.jpgThanks dad for the great service you provided and for being a part of securing our Freedom.

This week we woke up to a strong storm. When it got light enough to see I looked out and saw this large limb from the maple tree in the back yard.

ning-img-0764-11940-61.jpg?width=750So my son was on the chain saw cleaning up since I am still recovering and one of the things I was told not to do was pull on the weed eater, leaf blower or the chain saw. I wish he had said something about the vacuum.

Speaking of the arm after three weeks of therapy here is where I am now.

ning-img-0773-11940-34.jpgNot bad considering this was last week.

ning-img-0741-11940-18.jpg?width=750pretty good for a week. I am half way through my therapy and I think making good progress. Of course there have been tears when they stretch it.

So this after noon I got a little time in the shop to put finish on some cutting boards. I had my helper there and he kept telling to hang in there We Can Do It!.

ning-img-0770-11940-90.jpgSo what about you all? What are you plans for this weekend, will you be working on a project in your shop, home improvement, HDL (Me), yard work, traveling or just some plain old R&R? We here at TPW want to know what you are working on. We are interested in your projects, so please share them with us and take pictures. We love to see pictures.

So as my helper says, "Can We Do It?, Yes We Can!"

Get busy and post what you are doing, I am waiting to see.

The rain has stopped here and it has gotten very hot - all of a sudden.  Today it was 90 degrees and tomorrow  and Sunday suppose to be more of the same.  Too hot for shop or yard work so we are heading to the river to do a little gold prospecting with a hand dredge.  This river isn't the best for gold prospecting but will be fun trying and a great way to cool off.  :)

Great news with the recovery and therapy. I'd keep an eye on your help, he looks like he wants to use that hammer :).

As for my list, I have a few scroll saw projects to done and other to get finished. We'll see how it plays out, going through some issues here myself. Keep up the great work and recovery.

God bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

Well, today the first coat of finish goes on the tables.  Later today we'll feed all the kids and grandkids.  Tomorrow is worship and wait for the Worshams to arrive.  Busy weekend.

Thanks for the pics John, your arm does seem to be doing a lot better!

I have 2 things I am doing this weekend. 1 I am making a small bowl or the top of a candle holder, I haven't decided yet.

and 2 I am knocking the bark off a log that i am going to make bowl(s) out of. I first have to cut the thing in 2 or split it with an axe, I dont really have a way to just cut it without a chain saw or a large band saw. One of these days i am going to have to buy one or the other. Ok so here are the pics of what I am doing so fa this weekend.

Image 1 is Pecan while image 2 is a piece of Mesquite. The mesquite is approximately 4 1/4"  at the widest point and about 3 1/2" Inside the rim. So if I did make a candle holder out of it with another piece, it would support a 3" candle easily.

Have a great weekend everyone and a very safe and fun 4th if I do not talk to you again before then.

Well, my weekend was spent driving from So. Calif. to Indianapolis, Indiana to help our son and daughter in law move for a new job. We hit the road at 930am PST on Friday morning and arrived in Indianapolis at 300am EST covering about 2100 miles. The trip went well and the kids got into their apartment as it was all set up for them. They offloaded their truck and crashed my wife, daughter and I got a hotel nearby for a few hours of sleep. I awhile we will head over to the kid's apartment so we can offload the U-haul and my truck. Later today we will be meeting up with Ron Dudleston staying with him and Dorothy a couple of days before the 4 of use head south to spend a couple of days with John and Beth Moody in Alabama.

Took out some bamboo in the backyard that has been pretty contained for seven years and has finally decided to go everywhere including up through the deck.  Tired of fighting it so cut it all down.  Also repaired some slats in the backyard fence.

I had glued up the wall art and wasn't satisfied with it so tore it all apart - one square at a time. :(   Canvas wasn't flat enough to align squares correctly.  Added a piece of hardboard to the front of the canvas and have started lightly sanding the squares to remove glue from the edges.  Once all pieces are sanded will lay out design and glue them again.  :)  I'm determined to eventually hang this on the wall.

Lew,

It's especially nice that this location is close to home so a day trip is possible.  We enjoyed the picnic, dangling our feet in the very cold water, and looking for gold even though we didn't find any.

I was pulling for you to find some Gold. I just knew if you found a really large piece you would want to share it. I might even trade you some wood from the stash for a nice gold nugget. You know some of this nice walnut is like gold!  LOL

Great Idea Ron. Those are great projects when you can just take the stuff you have and make something useful.

John,

I agree, walnut is like gold.  We will be visiting some better gold prospecting locations in the very near future.
