July 1, 201313 yr yep, mailman knocked on the door, placed the package on a chair, and RAN!   Three bags surrounded this "Thing"Opened the first two bags, and could smell the RUST!One more to go....Well.... Hello, handsome!   A Stanley Defiance #4???/ That mess in the center of the body IS a frog.... Note how short the chipbreaker is?   And that fancy-schmanzy lever cap?  Sole was just as bad, tooThis might be FUN... for an hour or two... Got a brand-new 80 grit belt on the sander.   Dusted off the wire wheels.   Took this thing a part. Slowly.    Seems the wheel to adjust the depth was frozen.   a soak for awhile in 3in1 oil, clamp the body in the vise.  Grabbed a BIG pair of channel locks.    Wound up backing the wheel, BOLT AND ALL out.   Clamped the bolt in the vise, and backed it out of the wheel.  Buggered up the first couple threads, is all.  No biggie, will run the bolt back the way it came, after a good cleaning.  Wire wheels got after most of the rusties.  Changed wire wheels as needed to get into small areas. Got the beltsander set up, with the new belt.   Iron needed work, chipbreaker too.  Got after that rusty sole and sides of the base.    Grinder worked over the iron and chipbreaker as well. Some loose sandpaper on a flat board to take care of a few burrs ( Aaron & Raymond??) Then time to assemble this little $6.99 planeThe iron is stamped "Defiance" "Made in USA".  Bear in mind, I haven't taken the stones out for the iron, yet.   Handles need a little work.   Took it for a test drive..Just some Yellow Pine 1x...   The sole is now flat, and shinyNot too bad?   Of the $6.99..... $6 was for shipping.... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 1, 201313 yr Author And, this Friday, a second plane is doe to arrive here.   Maybe it will take a little longer??? The handsaws are, though. Got a better tote fitted, hardware cleaned up.   need to drill a few holes next... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 2, 201313 yr Author Just got about ready for the "After-work-napping".   After that event, and a few Mountain Dews to wake up, Re-furb Times!  Have some holes to drill, an iron or two the hone sharp.  Saw plates to polish.   honey-do list now includes taking a top table she found, adding some tapered Walnut legs, and some sort of aprons.  Seems she is tired of the Card Table being the Dining Room Table.....Right now, have to check a couple eyelids for cracks........Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 3, 201313 yr Author A Mohawk-Shelburne #4 arrived today.   Just a single, padded bag.  Plane itself was wrapped up in a newspaper!  Made by Millers Falls as a "Budget Line" of tools.   Will have pictures of the RUSTY, DUSTY. & CRUSTY plane.Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 3, 201313 yr Author AND, here tis the finished Mohawk-Shelburne #4, all cleaned upHandles and lever cap were painted black when new.  Lever cap was a very rough casting, with very little machining done to it at the factory.   A few coat of black paint hid that nicely.   So, lever cap is now painted blck.   Handles will be too, MAYBE...Near as I can tell, this is from late 40s era, right before Millers Falls dropped this line of planes (1949??) They also called this #900 plane.  I did have to "toss" the chipbreaker on this plane.   Could not make it touch the iron at all.   Had a Dunlap CB that did, so a swap was worked out. Frog cleaned up nice, alsoBolts in the handles are blued steel ones, as is the Adjuster wheel.   Tote bolt will need a washer or two.   Now, who has a #12 sized washer??? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 4, 201313 yr Author Wound up adding a couple nuts to the tote's bolt.   Tote is now in place and tight.     Handles for this plane, the Defiance plane and one other have been stripped down to almost bare wood.    One coat of that very stinky BLO on each.    Awaiting the smelly stuff to dry out....Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 4, 201313 yr Author Ok, a look at the "before" of the MS #900Handsome, ain't it?and all the parts.   A little bit nasty?   Well, it did take over an hour to clean it all up.  As above, I also stripped the woodworks on both of the planesJust a single coat of BLO.    Knobs were coated while spinning on the drill press.  Another look? They look a little better, after the clean up?? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
