July 9, 201313 yr Got out Saturday with my Bride and started working our way north into Tennessee. We were hitting a few Antique shops just looking around. I ran across a couple of planes at the last shop we were in at the end of the day. We were up in Springhill, Tn. So sitting in an old box was this little Stanley 110 pretty rusty. So it was jumping out to me saying take me home and clean me up. So I did. Then walked into another store across the street and saw in a back room a Stanley No.35 Transition plane. Also this one was in pretty rusty shape, but then again it is over 100 years old. I would love to leave it as is, but it is so bad it really has to be cleaned up. A few small cracks in the front mainly from just the wood drying out. No cracks or breaks in the cast iron but a good bit of the japanning is gone. As bad as I hate to, I will clean it off and redo it. I will probably soak the body with some Linseed Oil which is what it would have had on it new. So I guess I have a few more projects to work on. July 9, 201313 yr Love that transition plane John. It's a beaut. And don't' forget, you can always set it up on a mantle or shelf as is in your home as well, they make great decorator pieces in the home. I have a couple around our home too, just milling about, leaning up against a wall here, there, or next to the fireplace. Great find my friend! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 9, 201313 yr More inspiration?  Here is My Stanley #110Seems to look almost like new?   Works like itBe sure that the sole is flat, the iron is too.  Bevel goes up.   Be sure the edge of the iron is straight across. Polish the back IF you want.   Be sure to polish the area where the iron rests on the body. Set the iron so you can't feel the edge sticking out, then LIGHT taps to set the depth.  be sure the iron moves straight as you go. Anyone can get this to work.... July 10, 201313 yr Love that little 110 John. As soon as I find the right wood (Beech) in a larger diameter to fit what I need, I still need to make a knob for the plane I have. If i can't find the right size, I'll just go ahead and rebuild it using a different type of wood. Maybe oak that I can Dye. I also need to get a few more types(grits) of sand paper which I can do. I'll make a new thread when i start to working on it : Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks

July 11, 201313 yr Dupli-colour Ford Engine black for a paint colour. If not, Rustoleum Semi-gloss Black. That Stanley #110 has just Krylon gloss Black, cause I am CHEAP.    Use will dull the shine back to what it is supposed to be. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 11, 201313 yr Author Yea, I got a couple of cans of the Dupli-Color Ford Engine Black - Semi-Gloss.I also picked up some Red and I think I am going t get a can of Gray for the Stanley 110 Handyman I got. It already had a gray color on it. I have just cleaned it up with some cleaner and have not taken the wire brush to it. Not sure if I want to clean it and paint it our just leave it as is. Choices choices?John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
