July 10, 201313 yr Hi guys and ladies. So what does a wood turner do when he/she has a lathe that needs work and no other lathe to work with? PUNT! I got a couple of pieces of nice angled grain white oak in the mail yesterday, and of course I can't really do anything precise until the new headstock comes in, so I decided to play around a bit with it and do another of my favorite subjects, Eggs. Here is what I was working on this evening. It's all green semi wet wood, so i expect it to crack, we'll just have to see how badly it cracks. If it's just minor cracks of course, that will only add character to the piece. Here's hoping it doesn't crack too much. Should I leave it this way and see if it does? Maybe, maybe not, but i don't think I will this time. I'll just see what happens. I have 7 more pieces of this white oak, si if this one does crack to pieces, I'll still have a few to work with The new headstock was mailed or at least called to be picked up by the carrier yesterday, that means probably Wednesday of next week, before i see it. That's ok though. I'd rather they take the tim and be careful rather than rush and mess it up. I say this because i finally found the right size wrench to check that spindle lock sprocket and it was LOOSE! It wasn't even finger tight. now, just coming back from the shop a couple months before AT BEST, wouldn't one assume that the stuff inside was tightened down? I sure did, but it wasn't. So you better believe I will be checking it when it gets here to make sure it's tight. Anyway, enough of my rambling, here's the egg Dang i love these things. July 10, 201313 yr Charles, you need take take up carving. That way if your lathe goes south you'll have something to fall back on.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
July 10, 201313 yr Author Yea I do Ron and I have actually been talking about that with a couple of facebook friends but I don't have very steady hands, so that could be a problem but that can be remedied with time actually doing the carving,.carving Eggs wouldn't really be a problem though . Ron Dudelston said: Charles, you need take take up carving. That way if your lathe goes south you'll have something to fall back on. July 10, 201313 yr Author The Easy Finisher mid size and a skew 3/4" I find that the skew angle is almost a natural for hte egg shape and it also is easy to round ends with.  Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
