July 10, 201313 yr Well, it has been a frustrating week and at this point absolutely nothing to show for it except a bunch of fancy (and not so fancy) Walnut and Maple paint stirring sticks. My original plan was to create a glue up to form a pattern in a segmented turning. This is what it was to look like- actually the glue up was only from the center to the edge (1 5/8") long but I drew it larger to see what it would look like. But you know the old adage- "the best laid plans...". All the pieces were milled but unfortunately I was not as accurate as I needed to be. Gluing the "X" shape proved to be more difficult than I planned- no way to effectively clamp the pieces. Tape and rubber bands just didn't hold them securely. Even though I only glued one joint at a time, they were very difficult to keep in place. Hindsight says maybe I should have used CA and accelerator rather than Titebond. Also, I have learned that it is probably be easier to make smaller sections. The picture above is the "end" view of the proposed glue up. Each piece was about 10" long. My thinking was to slice the glue up into pieces and and glue them into an octagon. Maybe making 8 individual pieces would be easier?? So, anyway, I'm working on another idea- this time in pine and rolling pin cutoffs. All that is at a stand still, however, as we relatives visiting until next Monday. Might be able to sneak away and make a few cuts here and there. If it works, I'll post the results here next Wednesday. If not, you can find me out in front of the local Sherwin-Williams store selling paint stirrer sticks. July 10, 201313 yr Sorry it didn't work out so well Lew. THat's one thig that always keeps me from improving my turnings too, non straight cuts on wood pieces. If I could cut straight, I could probably make some pretty awesome turnings Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
July 11, 201313 yr That is very interesting Lew, I wondered how the segments were fabricated. Hey man, we learn by our mistakes right!!!!! I'll take a couple dozen of them stirring sticks!!!!! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 12, 201313 yr Well it looks like it should have been good. I have made a lot of pieces that should be paint sticks. A couple of weeks ago I cleaned out the cut off/mistake bin. It was pretty full.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 12, 201313 yr Hey, if its flat but too small for what I need I cut it up into match sticks to light the stove or Hot water heater,or even incense, nothing gets wasted here Charles Nicholls Site Host nicholls61@att.net Proud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
