Rust Hunt on a Friday Morning

Featured Replies

Got dragged out of a good nights sleep, bright and early this morning.    YARD SALES!!!

"Ok, I guess we can go and check a few out"

First couple of sales weren't even opened yet.  Bummer!   Got to a third one......Hmmm I smell RUST!Â

Yep, found about two decent small saws, WITH set on them!    One was from vhGermany, the other....who knows. Also on the table was this little "Gem"Handle was even stamped as a Millers Falls.   Nice and crusty!   Â

After a few more yard sales and missing out on a Delta bandsaw that was long gone when I got there. Stopped at the local Restore store.   Wife found a light she wants hung up, and I found a few old Chiselsthe one with a handle still aboard is a Corsair, and the other????  Maybe I will have to dig out the lathe later?   As for them sawsThey are still quite sharp, and full of set.   Might be "Users".   Handles may get a re-doNow as for the Hand Plane:   Got it torn down to just a spread of rusty partsAnd then I will see about a clean up.   Might take the rest of the day.   Base casting still has all of it's Gray paint, just where the metal was left bare is rusty.   Put most of the parts in a bowlThis is the last time they will be rusty together.   It is off to the Dungeon Shop with them. Â

There was one other "buy" today.    Spent a whopping $40 on a gas-powered, 4hp lawn mower!   Starts on the first pull!   Not that bad a day, hardly any clouds in the sky, litttle breeze, no Triple HHHs about mid 70s.    Too bloody nice a day to sit around the house, on a day off!

Ok, took just about one hour, to get from a pile of rusty old parts to .....something?

Set up the drill press with a brass wire brush, and as high of speed as the DP will goThis is what I use to get rid of most of the rust.   ran a few parts on the wheel, the baseThe lever cap was touchy, as it had a decal to work around.  Got it and the iron/chip breakerNow, there is no way I am holding small bolts against a wire wheel doing supersonic speeds, with my bare fingers.  A small pair of visegrips does just fine.   Cleaned all the bolts, threads and allThat adjuster wheel was a bit tricky.    Next, a change in wire brushes, to something that will get in thar..All the nooks and crannies on the frog and baseAlong with the underside of the lever cap. Got the beltsander installed in it's spot, had the iron and chip breaker to work onI also flattened the sole and sides of the base.    Just to get it close.   IF I want it within 0.000001 of flat, that will be later. Polished the backs as well.    Now, about this thing called the iron..

It seems whomever had this plane, knew nothing about how the iron went, or how to sharpen the edge.    Bevel was in contact with the chipbreaker, not the back of the iron,   Bevel was about 15 degrees, and a mile long.  Had to re-grind it to 25 degrees, flatten the back, and then hone it sharp.   Lots of grinder work, with the Blue Bowl filled with water.   Then the honing guide took a ride on the beltsander.    iron's edge started to look a little betterStarted to place the parts back on the planeHandles I will leave alone, for now.  Base's Gray paint as well. Time to "polish" the iron.   One more wire brushThere is just barely any room under that brush.   Iron and CB were then forced under the spinning brush,, until they shone like a mirror.   Time for a test drive?Time?  One hour and twenty minutes, start to test drive.  Will need to re-work the iron a bit.    Not quite straight across.Â

Nice job Steve and very informative. Your much faster than I am. So far I haven't worked on the irons of any of the ones I have.I guess I need to give that a try this weekend.

Glad to see you found a few jewels while out today.

Those are really nice Chisels Steve. I don't run across too many and if I do I can't tell much about them they are so bad.
