July 13, 201313 yr Well we are off and running with the rebuil;d of hte old plane I got about a year or so ago and really just sat aside for a day when I felt like messing with it. Time to get the old rust off. the blade was just as dirty as the part to the right but I have already started getting the rusty crusty off that. This would be a whole lot easier if I had a air compressor with baking soda as was demonstrated one time on a video with Capt. Eddie Castelin. He was demonstrating how to clean up an old forstner bit with baking soda under compressed air, it wasn't harsh enough to hurt hands but it took the rust and gunk back down to painted metal. He's also a heck of a wood turner if you haven't heard of him. Anyway, I started with 60 grit cloth and realized that it was way too harsh (very quickly I might add) for what little needed done here, so I backed off to 150 and it's working quite well. I am also thinking about getting some brass attachments for my drill to aid in getting this stuff off these parts. or at the very least some hand held brushes . A little WD40 never hurts either. Still looking for a piece of beech wood too but havent found one yet the right size for the knob. July 19, 201312 yr Author Bump, The old plane restore is now on hold for 2 reasons. I have a paying client that wants a bottle stopper, which should be done by tomorrow or Sunday I also need to get a few items made for John and the Combat Veterans in Crisis project. i will however be getting this taken apart and at least cleaned today. I'm hoping that the holes for the screws don't have bad wood, otherwise I'll have to figure out another way to re-mount the piece. More later. July 22, 201312 yr As for the beechwood knob, at least the one I used for the #33, was a glue up of two slabs.  I truned two, and it was a good thing, because one of the knobs split when I drilled the mounting holes. the before the drill press photoOOOOPS!  Well, at least one came out right... July 24, 201312 yr Author Hey Thanks Steve! Sorry I didn't respond sooner.. I am actually attempting one out of Apple wood. Not sure if it will work, and I know it wont look exactly the same as the old knob since I don't have a duplicator, but I am sure that I can find something that will work. Knowing that I can glue two pieces together and get that to work though is great news. Thank you much.If the apple fails, would Walnut stand up to the stress of using the tool? I have a couple pieces of black walnut that are big enough to use, but just not sure they can handle the stress without cracking. July 25, 201312 yr Author Yep thanks Unfortunately the apple knob wont work. It was split too deep so I couldn't save it, but it was mighty colorful the only way to tell this is even split is the 2 thin lines running across the grain. if that had not happened or would have been more shallow, I would have happily used it.
