July 16, 201313 yr I had a couple of boxes here when I got home today. Wow what excitement! First up is this No.78 I got with the box although I am not sure this is the original box. Then I had this large box containing this nice Stanley No. 7 I am excited to add these two to my collection. John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201313 yr Wow! Ok John, you crossed the line!!!! You are officially hooked man! Steve!!!!!! We got another one for ya!!!!! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 16, 201312 yr Now, did the #78 come with the depth stop, and the fence pieces?   Might have to shop for those? This shows all the piecs that should be there.  Make sure that the rod isn't bent at the threaded part. You need to check the spur, to see if it needs to be sharpened up. Takes a very small screwdriver.  DO NOT lose that little bolt, either. Never had a #7 other than an off balance, bob-tailed KK7.   With the sizes I use in the shop, a #6 is long enough.  Another picture of my Wards #78??In use as a shoulder plane...With the fence installed. All it does is set how wide a cut you make.   Spur is for going across the grain.  Nice little plane. Front iron holder is for use as a Bullnose plane.   Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 16, 201312 yr Author No Steve it didn't have the depth stop or the fence. I got it at a good price and may have to pay way more for the fence and accessories than I did for the plane. As a matter of fact, the box may have been worth more than the plane. As I had looked on line, it appears there are lots of them out there missing the depth stoop and fence. Most guys would just throw that in the tool box and forget it and use the plane.I'll keep my eyes open for those and maybe I can pick they up right. Should you run across a set let me know.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr Author I know John, I got to get this arm back in commission so I can get back to woodworking and not have some much free time to wonder around drooling over the woodworking candy, My sweet tooth has caused my shop to put on a few pounds.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr Author By the way, Steve, I did find out last night that you can go to Stanley's site and order most of those parts from them. They still carry it in stock. Prices are better than I saw on eBay.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr If not, then there is always "nhplaneparts" on ebay.   Quick shipper, too!   Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

July 16, 201312 yr Author I saw a Craftsman No.78 in a store the other day. I was in pretty good condition and they wanted 30.00. I got mine for less than that.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr Mine was about half of that, counting shipping.   Didn't have a box, though...... Tip for that plane:  When setting the iron, set the iron in a little loose, then lay it on the right side of the plane.   When everthing is sitting flush on that side, tighten the iron.   This makes sure that the iron is flush with that side of the plane.  Wouldn't do to have it stick out further than the spur. Tip #2:   leave the depth stop off, set the spur to the "cut" position.  You can now lay the plane on it's side and use it as a BIG shoulder plane.  As for rabbets, none better than this plane.   Just start at the far end ( away from you) and work your way back, taking as big a bite as you can.  As you get near the depth, back off the iron a bit, until the last pass just barely makes a shaving.  Same with across the grain, except you usethe spur to cut ahead of the iron. It made this long rebate along the back of a bench side. Have to watch, as it will get jambed up with shavings.. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

July 18, 201312 yr When you go to order a part, there is a little blurb about "not in stock"?    Look a bit further down the page, and see "Service Net", there you can order the parts. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
