July 16, 201312 yr Thanks y'all, I'm sure I'll find this site very useful. I do have a question though, does anyone know where I could find and/or build some woodworking and wood carving tools? I have a very small budget so any advise is welcome.
July 16, 201312 yr Craig,Can you elaborate on what kind of woodworking tools you are looking for or interested in building? I am sure someone here can help you with it.Of course Craigs list is always a good place to start. You will be surprised what you can find there. Some bargains can be found on eBay and online sites and then if you are looking new, of course WoodCraft has a great selection of wood carving tools.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr Author I'm looking for mostly hand tools like planes(ie molding, round, hollow, router planes), dovetail saw, basically any tool the doesn't require power to use. I'm trying to get into traditional woodworking. I don't need to get projects done in a day, I need them to last me a while. Basically I'm trying to follow in Roy underhill's footsteps.
July 16, 201312 yr Here are some links to a site/articles for some tools. Although the site is primarily for turning, some of the tools can be adapted to carving. http://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/woodturningarticles.asp http://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/Articles/Making%20a%20Pyramid%20Tool.pdfhttp://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/Articles/Making%20a%20Hook%20Tool.pdfhttp://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/Articles/Making%20your%20own%20Turning%20Tool%20HeatTreating.pdfhttp://www.hiltonhandcraft.com/Articles/Making%20your%20own%20Turning%20Tool%20FAQ.pdf Here is another link for tempering/hardening home made tools. July 16, 201312 yr Craig, Ebay is a great place to find some great tools at a good price if you're patient and not too trigger happy on the buy now button. Go to this page on Ebay and you'll see what you can get at http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR6.TRC1... You are following some great footsteps in Roy Underhill, I have been getting more and more into Roy the past year and I love his shows, even though they are repeats, I watch them at night before bed as I have them recorded. His shop is completely human powered, a place I would like to be later in life, when time is plenty and I can afford to take an hour to rip down a board by hand and flatten and surface it by hand. I envy your devotion this early in the game to keep it pure, many of us started out with a powered up shop, just to find years later that there is and has been something missing in our woodworking, the true skill of hand work. I started late in life, bought my first hand plane 4 years ago, and I have been collecting quality hand tools since, using them more and more, wishing I could use them always. But much of my work is done for money, and to do it all by hand, would take me out of our local market, but for a few of my customers, hand work is not viable. I do have a couple customers who appreciate hand made, the marks of the smoothing plane, panel raising by hand, etc, they love the non perfect marks of hand work and they are willing to pay for it as well. Many customers only want it done, and looking good, they don't care how it gets there, so power is in order most of the time, but when I do get that occasional customer who appreciates the work being done more by hand, it's a joy to work. Keep up the great course you are on Craig, you are in a good mindset, starting off the way you are, congratulations. Don't get the power bug, keep your hands busy, and you will be a better woodworker than most of us here in no time. Good job! July 16, 201312 yr Check the local flea markets and antique shops. Stay away from the frilly ones, but the ones that just pile it up. I found a box full the other day for about 14.00/each. Wasn't what I was looking for at the time. You will be surprised how many are out there.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 16, 201312 yr Craig, I'm a devout ebayer. Many of my shop tools came from either ebay or a couple of remanufactured tool sites online. Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
July 16, 201312 yr I second what John Morris and Ron D said about Ebay. If I am looking for used tools, I usually go there first so that I can see what they look like if pictures are included and I wont buy them if pics are not included. There of course can be ripoffs as with anything but if a person knows tools and about waht they generally cost new or used, then you can't get ripped off very easily I hope that helped in some small way. Make lots of woodchips and have a great day!
