July 19, 201312 yr I saw this poor little plane on eBay yesterday and decided I would throw a bid at it. I was fully expecting to be outbid on this one since it was only going for $3, but that's where it ended! Yep $3, so I'll get it here and get her cleaned up after the Union is done. I know that the 220's are not all that expensive to start with, but clearly worth more than $3 especially if hte knob isn't broken . Looks like I will have to start buying finer sand paper to clean and sharpen these things with. I just can't seem to leave a poor rusty homeless tool alone LOL I should have known though after finding an old bayonet style knife stuck in a fencepost as a kid. Who knows how many years that thing had been left there but it was all rusted over too. I brought it inside and basically treated it the same way I would an iron skillet. Still wish I had that knife but it was lost in moving. I'll post progress pics as this one is cleaned up too. July 19, 201312 yr Charles, I am not sure of the time frame, but I believe that Stanley made some of the 220's with blue knobs. I don't think it has been just painted, I believe it came that way.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
July 19, 201312 yr Author Good to know John thanks, I wondered if that was factory or not but yea this is the one I just showed on your other reply.I also have a small bid on that other stanley but it's a lot newer or at least doesn't have rust all over it.Here's the link to that one even though I haven't actually won it yet.John Moody said:Charles, I am not sure of the time frame, but I believe that Stanley made some of the 220's with blue knobs. July 21, 201312 yr IIRC, Stanley went through a TwoTone (ugly yellow) phase, a Maroon phase (dark reddish everything) then theblue phase.   I had a #110 from the 60s, blue body, chrome cap iron, blue kanoobie out front.  Nowadays, it is back to Basic Black & chrome, with a splash of yellow. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 22, 201312 yr Author Well I seem to have a mix here of I guess it's called maroon (I call anything that looks red as red, I'm not savvy on all the newer color names), with a blue knob. maybe it was made this way, maybe someone added an appropriate knob later of a wrong color. Who knows? All I know right now is that I have a small little rusty tool that needs some TLC I also may be missing a screw here I am not sure. There is a place for a screw that has none is all I really know at this point. I'll do some checking and see. July 22, 201312 yr Looks like you are missing the screw and the blade adjustment. The screw and the piece it attaches to allow you to move the blade lower or higher. July 23, 201312 yr Author OK Yep thanks guys I thought so. Thanks Steve I'll look there for one. I will eventually find one I'm sure. August 4, 201312 yr Author I mentioned having a bid on yet another Stanley, well I won that too and just got it on Tuesday, so here it is. It's only a little rusty and appears to be complete, although it's suffered some paint splatter. Unfortunately I seem to have misplaced anything to measure with so I cant tell you much about its size other than the pen blank next to it is 5" long. Any idea on what model this is? It doesn't seem to say anywhere. Thanks all. I think this will be the last one I buy for a while, at least until one moves out. I don't have a lot of room to keep them and the landlord has already received a complaint by the bug sprayer guy that the apartment is not up to HIS standards, so they are doing an inspection on the 7th. I say More power to them if they wanna be nasty, let em. I have made no secret to anyone that I am a wood turner and I do it in my apartment. Oops I am letting my frustration out. My apologies, I'll stop there. Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
August 4, 201312 yr A Stanley made in England.  A #4 sized smooth plane, about late 60s, early 70s, maybe..Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
August 5, 201312 yr Author Thanks Steve I appreciate the help.steven newman said:A Stanley made in England.  A #4 sized smooth plane, about late 60s, early 70s, maybe..Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
August 5, 201312 yr Charles, Look at the Type 20 and your probably falls in there on this link.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 6, 201312 yr Author Yea I'm not sure if that's it or not. Type 20 as it states here says that the wood is supposedly lightly stained, whereas mine here are heavily stained or painted black, and since it had no model number stamped anywhere, I had no idea how to figure it out. I hope to get them all cleaned up and maybe sold again but if they don't sell, I wont lose any sleep over it John Moody said: Charles, Look at the Type 20 and your probably falls in there on this link. August 7, 201312 yr That's a nice low angle stanley 22 you got there. I just bought one from steve not too long ago.Great workhorse for fine detail and works well as a all around quick plane for cedar shingles, quick removal of corners and just an all arouind great workbelt plane once you get her cleaned up and sharpened.
