Kobalt making handplanes?

Featured Replies

While pricing some plywood panel at Lowes, just had to go through the tool areas..

Hmmm, where are the Stanley planes?   What are these blue things hanging in their place?

Three out of the four hanging there were a blue colour, and said Kobalt on the packages.   The fourth one was a red block plane, and I don't think  even I would touch it with a hundred foot pole.

There is a 6-1/2" long block, about like a 120, priced to sell @$14.98

There is a 7"  long block plane, about like a #220, priced to sell @ $ 17.98

There is a 9-3/4" long, #4 sized bench plane.    Looks just like a Bailey style, instead of the Bedrock style.  Even has a cast iron frog, milled & polished sole and sides, a frog adjuster bolt, and an actual lever style lever cap.    Heavy casting, too.   Priced to sell @$ 29.98

Been looking online at a couple reviews...... might have to scrape up some cash and review the bench plane.    And, being a Kobalt tool, no questions asked refunds IF I don't like it.

Hmmmm, verrrry IN-TER estink.....

Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

Very interesting indeed Steve, we'll be looking for a review shortly?

Kobalt is the Stores brand name. The hand tools are rumored to be made by Snap On. A high quality tool I use daily at work. I have one of the Kolbalt welding Helmets and love it, it is a by product of Lincoln Welding though. I wonder who is making the planes? I remember Steve buying a plane at HF and reviewing it. Seemed like a decent deal at the review. I'm interested in this, I have a couple #4"s and several other Stanley, and Record Planes I love. The older ones are so much better then what is on the shelf today.

A review will come only after I scrape up enough spare change to buy one......

Got two others coming in this week to clean up......

Just mailed three others off to their new home.

I haven't been in that part of Lowe's here in a while. I did a search on their web site and they are listed there. I will have to walk through that section next time I am there.

They even come in Kobalt Blue.

Just poking my head in here, yea it does sound interesting. there are times where I need a plane but nothing that big otherwise I'd get one and give a review myself. I guess that is why I got the 220, it's more the size I need :)
