Friday, July 26th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda This Weekend?

Featured Replies

To start off, Happy Anniversary to WoodCraft. Celebrating their 85th anniversary this weekend. Discounts store and online so check it and and help them celebrate their anniversary. You know they are there to "Help You Make Wood Work".

I plan on being in Nashville at some point this weekend and going by the WOODCRAFT store in Franklin, Tn. just south of Nashville.

We are going to attend the Nashville Flea Market.

Looking forward to trying to do a little woodworking in my shop this weekend. I was back to the Dr. on Tuesday for a followup on my rotator cuff. He told me no weed eaters, chain saws, leaf blowers and I added vacuum cleaners and dish washers to the list. I did talk to him about working in my shop and he told me it was okay to do some light work, no heavy lifting or pushing or pulling hard on anything. I believe I have all the tops so waxed by now the boards just fly across them. New blade in the table saw so I think all is good to give it a try.

I am looking forward to reports from the AWFS show in Vegas. Boy I wish I was there.

So what's on your agenda this weekend? Will you be in the shop making a new project, building a new jig, updating the shop, re-doing some tools, doing some Home Improvement, lawn and garden work, HDL (never ends), or getting some R&R from the heat? Believe it or not, We here at TPW are very interested in the projects you are working on. Inspiration is giving to many when they see what you have accomplished. And hey, everyone likes a little back patting when you have finished a project. So come on and share them with us in the forums. Tell us a little about the project and let us enjoy with you the finished project. Picture, Pictures please. We love to see the wonderful way you put it together and finish out the wood.

So what are you waiting for, I am watching to see what gets posted.

All the guys are excited to see what you have built.

Sounds like you are chomping at the bit to get stuff moving in the shop John. Great idea about adding the vacuum cleaner and dishwasher to the "do not touch or my shoulder will explode" list. Too bad Beth won't buy that, but you get an "A" for effort. :-)

Tami and I will be heading home from Las vegas in a couple of hours. I should be able to get some stuff posted about the AWFS Fair tonight as I got a lot of sifting to do through the photos and the vendor materials. We were so busy during the day and worn out at night it was tough to get my mind into doing anything other than crashing on the couch to watch some TV or read my book.

For a little preview, I was disappointed in this year's show as they were down 10-20% in the number of vendors from the 2011 show. There were a lot of big names that were "No Shows"in the tool department which was sad. But others were expanding their presence and doing quite well. I saw a few cool new items and drooled over a couple of tools that I want/need/beg the wife/ etc. to buy. So be patient John, I will get some stuff up soon.

Downside to our our Vegas trip is that my ankles are sunburned and getting a bit of heat rash as the temps are in the low 100's for most of the day and the reflection of the heat up from the concrete overcame my very liberal use of 30 SPF sunscreen. But I will survive and carry on.

Not much of an artist, here. About the only thing I can draw are flies.

Refurb a few planes.

have a small table for a bedside to get moving on.    End table the Boss wants will start when she buys the plywood...

Saturday I have a show here in town and my wife's class reunion tonight.  Tomorrow, worship in the morning and work on a nasty drain plug in the afternoon.

Received two new orders this week so I'll be working on them.  One order is for a 112-coin quarter map going to Virginia and the other is a "Too Blessed To Be Stressed" plaque going to Massachusetts.

Neither required painting so Lew is off the hook.  Ron all my pipes are, fortunately, working.  Moody be safe out there and be careful with that shoulder.  Allen, take care of that sunburn.  Steven you are our "plane" expert.

OK, folks - down to the shop I go

Small table's top is trimmed up nice and square.   Circ saw to rough it on each end, then a jack plane to shoot the ends smooth.   Will be working on it off and on today, while waiting on the Mailman to drop off a Dunlap plane.

When over this morning to where I got those planes this morning... all gone away, drat!     Maybe the showers this morning had something to do with it?

Nice family picture John!!!!! I absolutely love that one!

As far as my weekend is shaping up, I got a late start on the pine cabinets yesterday, oldest daughter had a slumber party with her girlfriends all night long, they came over around 5pm on Thursday, as soon as I got home from work I was barbecuing for the gang, they stayed up till 4am watching scary movies and just being teens and having a blast. Myself and Mrs. Morris and my two youngest kids all went upstairs after burgers were served and let the girls have the 1st floor. Then I had to make sure everyone was fat and happy the next morning with breakfast and then dropping off the youngest girl at her horse riding lesson, then picking her up, then other things, then I finally get in the shop late Friday afternoon, then, well, sorry for the boring details.

Yesterday I got the rear boards planed to 1/2" and mounted to the base cabinet, today I will get the upper cabinet built and hopefully the rear boards on as well. I was working with Titebond III and the set time was dragging my productivity down a tad, yesterday after picking up youngest from horse lesson we took a drive to the H Depot and I bought some Titebond II and the productivity has already improved just using it yesterday. Typically I'll use TB II for general work and projects like this where I like a quick set time, but I only had the TB III on hand and I was too lazy to go out and get the TB II until yesterday.

I'll have pic tonight of my progress thus far!

Hope you all have a wonderful wood filled weekend!!!!!

By the way John, it looks like I'll be using all 200 feet of that pine on these cabinets, the rear boards and shelving eat up a bunch of pine!!

John Morris,

I can relate to the teenager slumber party thing. Been there, done that for many years. Now with my kids (son 24 and moved to Indiana and daughter 21still living at home) we have not had an overnight giggle-fest in some time. Enjoy those times even though you may not get as much sleep as you would like. I am looking forward to seeing how your shelf turns out.

It is great that you are able to work with your son on woodworking. My dad was a wrench turner and did not do any woodworking at all. The only woodworking tool I ever saw him buy and use was a Skil saw so he could cut 2x's and 4x's to make an engine stand so he could rebuild his 1952 MG-TD motor when he was restoring it. I learned a lot from him about working on cars and tried to always be at his side when he was working on the cars or his motorcycles. I have all of his tools today and more importantly the good memories. Yo and your son will both benefit form the time together.

John,

Thanks for posting that ol' timey pic of your great great grandfather. I use my grandfather's likeness to promote my S2S, as that standard American veteran of the day, immigrant gone good! They were incredibly resourceful. Maybe someday they will be posting us up?Just saying the same thing? Back in the day they were...

Regards,

Chris

Thanks Chris. I love the old pictures of family too. I have a bunch more. I'll post some along the way. I love the one you are using.

I hope they have good things to say about us!

One of these days soon I am going to get back to doing some real woodworking.

I spent a good part of today putting together the Excalibur Blade Guard/Dust Hood. I had to add some bracing under the extension table on my table saw to hold this thing up. It is HEAVY. When I was looking at it, I figured the pipe was PVC.

So anyway I almost got finished before I had to pull off and get some other things done.

ning-img-0323-11067-52.jpgning-img-0324-11067-9.jpgRoad finally got dry enough to make it to the Wood Stash and get that Walnut stickered and Stacked.

It was a productive day. Shoulder and hand are coming along, but still pretty weak.
