July 27, 201312 yr A Dunlap #4 sized plane arrived today, looking a bit rusty. Sole needed some workAnd just needed a darn good cleaning up.  Iron needed to be a wee bit sharper, too. So, after an hour or so in the Dungeon Rehab Center for old planes...Not perfectly flat (see the sharpie lines?) but close enough where it counts. Sand , draw new lines, sand agian.  And now, there rest of this heavy planecleaned off all the black paint from the bearing areas, including the ramp on the base. frog face was flattened, bolts wire wheeled clean. Iron and chipbreaker now touch all the way across. Japaning was almost 98% good! Not sure about them handles, yet....That is one BIG wheel there!  Doesn't leave much room for fingers either. Well, got a piece of 1-1/2" wide pine in the vise (leg stock for a small table) and took this old boy for a test drive on Pine Ave.Because I had the iron all the way back, took awhile to get this shaving to appear. Not too bad, and, I haven't even used the stones on the edge yet!  Seems to be a Stanley made for Sears Dunlap plane. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 27, 201312 yr Nice job Steve, you are going to have to open a market on these planes and start getting them out to the masses and make some extra tool money while you are at it. Nice shaving. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker

July 29, 201312 yr Author Will post some better shavings after awhile. Seems I had the frog too far back from the mouth.  Have also taken the stones, 2K grit paper and a strop to the edge, might work a little better...  still trying to find out who made this Dunlap plane. Iron does have a "model number"" of sorts stamped in it @ DUNLAP REGISTERED TRADE MARK  619.3702 This is a big, heavy #4 sized smooth plane.   Well, after a few trail runs, a reset of the iron back just a smidge( .5mm to 1mm) and joint a piece of pine for a track to run on..We have Goesemmer shavings in the shop Planer? July 30, 201312 yr Steve, the best I have been able to determine, Sears made the Dunlap line of hand planes. Now, who made them for Sears? Hard to tell. It is considered like the Stanley Handyman and Defiance line. Stanley made them but made them cheaper. Doesn't mean they won't cut.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
