July 31, 201312 yr I had picked up an old Stanley #31 fore plane awhile back.   Looking a bit old, and neglectedBroken tote, finish was getting worn out.  I redid the black metal parts, shined the brass part up, and worked over the cambered iron a bit.   Next up was all that wood. Seemed I had a Nice, New handplane, called a Wood River #4 V3.  Stipped the body down to get rid of any metal parts, clamped that big body into the vise, with sand paper covering the jaws. Got each side cleaned off, and smooth, and found a whole new plane body..Oh.... yeah.... Had a cheapo plane I WAS going to part out on fleebay. Got to looking at the handles on it, Hmmmm, maybe a reshaping here and there, maybe drill a better hole for a brass nut?  Sand them down a bit and install. Still need to sand a bit on the top of the tote, rubs the lateral a bit.Still not sure what is going on up front, thoughI don't think that is from wearing out, as it goes around the entire right sideAt the very front corner, there is almost a 1/4" missing.  Can't just chop off the nose, can I now?  Might leave it as is.  Still haven't got to the point of a finish for the wood, yet.  Just a cheap $15 plane from a yard sale.... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

July 31, 201312 yr Steve, That old plane is just plain, Maybe a pass or two through a jointer would square up the sole. Â Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host
July 31, 201312 yr Author Already been hand planed smooth on the sole.   Right at the front corner, it is almost 1/4" lower than the rest of the sole.  Don't think I can plane that much off, and have a working plane. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
July 31, 201312 yr I guess many things are possible, but it could have gotten dropped on that corner causing it to be lower.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
