Friday, August 2nd, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda this Weekend?

Featured Replies

Wow, can you believe it is the first of August. By the looks of the traffic and post on here the past week, you can certainly tell we are in the "Dog Day's of August". I think everyone is laying around in the shade sipping on some cold ice tea and not doing much shop work or computer browsing.

Tonight is First Friday in downtown Florence, Alabama and I will be there with a booth of my woodworking items setup to display and hopefully sell. An event that takes place on the First Friday of each month (Duh) from March through December. All items displayed must be hand made from the Artisan displaying them. I have been doing this show for about the past five years or so. Tonight I will be there and setup.ning-photo-10819-97.jpg

I am planning on getting in some shop time myself this weekend. I have been back to the Dr. and the therapist and they have given me the okay to do some things, just no heavy lifting and be smart. So I am hoping to get the bottom in a cedar chest that has been on my bench now for months waiting on me. I also have so many other things waiting I'll just have to pick some that I can do and get started.

I have a special order cutting board that will ship out on Monday and I need to make two new rockers for an old rocking chair. Not sure how far I will get, but I am just glad to be able to get back in the shop and do a little work.

So what's on your agenda this weekend? All of us here at TPW love to see the projects you are working on and share them. You never know you might just inspire a new woodworker and give them an idea.

So will it be, working in your shop getting more organized, building a new heirloom, restoring an old tool or piece of equipment, home improvement, yard work, or getting some zzzz's on the couch and working on  your "Dog Day" time?

What are you waiting for, we are all wanting to know. The suspense is killing us. Show us your projects in the post and tell us something about it.

Like you John with my healing rotator cuff, I am at the point that I can do more stuff as long as I don't go too crazy. Actually, the exact words of my doctor were "You can do some easy stuff in your garage as long as you don't do in heavy lifting or hammering on things." To which I replied "That is the reason that I have pneumatic tools." He gave me this annoyed look and said "Just be careful and don't do anything stupid." Then I just smiled and nodded.

My wife the special education teacher is getting her classroom back together for the new school year as she starts back to work on Monday with a week of prep and meetings and then her kids come back on August 14th. So we have gotten all of her stuff moved out of my garage/shop and back to her classroom so now I can start reclaiming my garage back from the spiders and the mountainous pile of stuff that has been growing on my 2 workbenches since January when I had my shoulder injury. Now that my shoulder has healed up better and that Tami and I are done with all of our summer travels (Since the end of June we have covered close to 6,500 miles and been through 13 different states on various trips) I have one more surgery to get taken care of this next week which is to repair a serpentine deviated septum in my nose. It is something that I was born with but never knew I had until I saw an "Ear, Nose & Throat" specialist a few months back as I was struggling with a really nasty sinus infection. So due to having to have the 2 shoulder surgeries that took priority over the nose, and dealing with all of our travels, I can finally get this done. So on Wednesday August 7th I will have the surgery done. It will be outpatient and I will be in the hospital for about 3 hours. Then I will have to wait a week and then go back in to have the doctor remove all the "stuffing" in my nose. So after that I should be able to breath a lot better and have less issues with sinus infections.

So there is light at the end of the tunnel finally in my woodworking world.

Well lets see. Hopefully I'll finally get two beer/ iced tea tables finished for the front porch. Fishing rod holders for the boat built and lay out three Roubo folding bookholders. Been slacking all summer so it's time to get started on something.

Pat

For the first time in months I don't have a project on the bench or in the wings.  Today I shipped a decorative box to Laguna for the Troops auction and I just realized that I shipped it and didn't get a picture of it.  Oh well.  I guess I sit and wait for the Spirit to move me.

Congratulations, Ron!!!!

So John, by the time you see this, the First Friday will be over. How'd ya do?

Beautiful pens Rick. You do nice work.

After the Lexan fiascos, I finally got the panels installed in the doors. Those discs and divots worked great. If I'm not too busy playing with Annie and Oakley, I may get the doors hung tomorrow. Locks and handles, too. Man, I'll be so happy to get this beast gone! Got 4 large, identical curly maple jewelry boxes to make to fulfill an order. Can't even start till the shop is back in order. So, part of the weekend (My weekends go on forever) will be spent cleaning and organizing.

Good Luck John.

Myself I have nothing specific to do so I will be taking it easy and just doing odds and ends and maybe a bit of stock rebuild.

Today and tomorrow I'll be working on the saw tooth shelf system for our pine cabinets, and getting the shelves to fit properly, and building the doors!

Thanks Lew, we had a great night and a huge crowd. Every month the crowds get bigger. At times there were so many people walking in each direction in front of our booth, with the ones that we stopped people could hardly get bay.

Finishing up 2 "Thorns of Crowns. Got the glass today so assembly is all that is left is assembling them. Also been working on another John 3:13 plaque. Made a detour today, a company is taking apart a building in the South Side of Pittsburgh. Grabbed a couple 3 x 10 X 6 ft old oak beam sections. The contractor said they are over 100 years old and all heart wood. Looking forward to getting them cleaned up and seeing what is really there. If it works out right, I should end up getting a ton of this as they are still dismantling this building for renovations.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

So how did you all fair with your weekend projects?

I was able to finish up a special order cutting board and get it shipped out this morning.

ning-specialorderboard-10821-35.jpgThis board was a bit larger than my usual large board. Here is my large board next to this special order board.

ning-specialorder2-10821-94.jpgI also got the dado's cut in the bottom of my panels for a cedar chest and the piece for the bottom sized. Should be able to get them glued up tonight. Then it is just size the top and install it and it will be ready to finish and ship.

So how did you all do? Get any projects finished?

Still working at getting Tami's classroom all set up. I was out there today putting together a new rolling file cart, hooking up her TV, VCR and DVD player and installing a new printer as her old one would no longer recognize the print cartridges. I even held the cartridges up so the printer could see them and verbally introduced them to the printer individually saying "Mr. Printer, I want you to meet Mr. Black, Mr. Yellow, Mr. Blue and Mr. Magenta print cartridges." But the arrogant printer just kept beeping so I tossed him in the trash. Getting ready to head down to see the doctor for the required pre-op meeting with him and then Tami and I will have some dinner and maybe go see a movie before heading back home as we have to wait for the rush hour traffic to clear out which doesn't happen until after 7pm. Tomorrow I hope to do some cleaning in my shop if I don't have to help Tami in her classroom.
