dewalt 788 scroll saw

Featured Replies

Seeing how my 6 year old, bottom of the line Delta scroll saw is about worn out, my wife told me I need to get a new one! (love her)

I know the Excalibur is the top of the line but I don't have that much $$$ for my hobby

On line at H/D is the Dewalt 788 for $449. This is more in my price range!

Any one have much experience or heard good or bad about them? The online price is good thru sept. so I can think about it a little.

Thanks

Harry,

Sorry can't help you with something this new.

Almost all of my machines are older than I am, and I'm older than dirt.

We're about the same, Larry. Some days I feel older than dirt and others it as old as dirt!

I have heard nothing but good things about the Dewalt scroll saw.

I have heard good things about it also. Isn't it the same as the Delta?

John,

It's not the same as my Deltas.

The Dewalt is  great saw. It maintains great reviews and high ratings. My only question is since Dewalt and Delta come from the same place, all the same features is the Delta comes with a 5 year warranty. I am looking to buy a new saw, my porter cable is hanging on by a thread or two. At this point I would not hesitate to buy a Dewalt though. It is the best rated mid priced saw on the market today.

Mine is the Delta "Shop Master" which I've had now for over 6 years. It's been a good saw to learn on and see if I really liked to scroll saw, which I do.  It's starting to knock a little and the blade holders are sloppy. I can see the lower part of the blade make an oval motion instead of straight up and down making for some rough cuts. I enjoy sawing so now is the time to upgrade to a better saw.

Just popping my head in here. I haven't heard much about any of the scroll saws, but since I am unfortunately not in the market for any new saw's (dangit), I guess that's to be expected.

Harry - you can't go wrong with a 788.  They have been around for years.  I still have my old one but don't use it anymore because I upgraded to the EX-21.  The only negative I know is that the early Rev 2 machines that were made in Taiwan had some tolerance issues.

I have a DeWalt 788.  I am on my third motor but I have ran it pretty hard in the past. I have no clue what service meant but it seems my magnets fell off each time. Before that statement, I didn't know I had magnets in the motor.

There was a rumor that DeWalt was going to discontinue the DeWalt 788 but apparently that is not true.  There is a very similar scroll saw  - Delta 40-695.  DeWalt, Delta, and Porter Cable are all owned by the Black and Decker Corporation.

I've been happy with the DeWalt.  It's been a real work horse.  :)  When I do need to replace the DeWalt 788, I plan to carefully compare the DeWalt 788 and the Delta 40-695.  I have heard the Delta 40-695 is a terrific machine and about the same price.

Happiness is wood chips flying!

SQ - I have also heard of the 788's demise.  Maybe they have changed their mind since the 695 is NOT getting a very good reputation. ! ! ! ! !  I was also contemplating replacing my 788 with the 695 and after reading about it (and Woodcraft refusing to put it in stores) I fixed and upgraded my EX-21.  Glad I did.

Fred,

That's very interesting that Woodcraft has refused to sell the 695 in their stores.  I had not heard that. That certainly puts a new spin on things.

I have checked a couple of stores here in the southeast and that is the case.  The reasons given:  customers not happy, very hard to get

Thanks everybody for the info. I've been on the road to S. Calif for the last few days so I haven't been around.

So far it looks like I'm going with the 788. I'll be down here for a few weeks visiting and will check it out more when I get home.

Thanks again!
