August 9, 201312 yr Well the new mortiser came yesterday. The box was in excellent shape, no holes or dents. Out of the box and ready for cleanup, that took about 30 minutes. had to remove the protective oil coating and wipe everything down. Assembly went quickly, all pieces and parts went where they were supposed to go without any problem. Once all assembled, i planned a piece of pine to use for a test cut and to make sure the chisel was plumb and square as mentioned in the instruction book. Now for the cut, very smooth action with the handle. it is long enough to create plenty of downward force. What's that sound? Oh, the drill bit was too close to the end of the chisel, so I dropped it down slightly and all is well. The cut was effortless, straight, accurate, and clean edged. I would say the initial assessment is the General 75-040 M1 is going to be a very welcomed addition to my shop. A thumbs up!!  Now price. I looked very closely at the Delta and the Woodriver. But then I saw this ad for General. I searched some reviews and was delighted in what I saw. So Performance Tool had it on sale for $389 plus free shipping, so there you have it.

September 15, 201312 yr Back before I built a slot mortiser / Mini mill I was looknig for a bench top. I researched the living beegeebus (that's the bus that the Bee Gees rode in) outta the topic and the one that rose to the top of the field was the General. The final shoot off was PM and big G. General was beefier and better in just enough ways to win my favor.
March 30, 201412 yr Steve looks like a good sturdy piece of equipment. I'm sure you will get a lot of good work done with it. Thanks for the review, I have been thinking about getting one for a while.   Thanks again hope you have fun with the new tool.
