Stanley Tote Repair - Strange

Featured Replies

I have not seen a repair made like this to any of the planes I have run across. Someone put a good bit of effort in making this repair.

ning-img-0667-10172-50.jpgI don't understand why they went through all this trouble and didn't glue it back together. When I loosened the bolt going down through it both halves fell off. It could have been a strong fix.

From the back I didn't even notice it when I first looked at the plane.

ning-img-0668-10172-92.jpgI guess I am assuming it is a fix. I have not seen any totes like this at all. Any of you seen one like this. I have looked on all the sites I can find and nothing.

Just doesn't make since not to have glued it back.

That is very strange, glue that thing together and you'd have to break the wood to get it apart again. I don't get it either, I would like to know how they did it though.

thats not a handmade tote, it's a machine made handle.

I've seen them made like that for other stuff.

It also may have been a prototype.

Could it have been a purchased replacement? It looks like a great idea. As Charles said, some glue and that thing would never come apart.

At least it looks better than a tote I was cleaning up.    Someone had inserted a piece of brass tube where the top of the bolt goes.    There is also a small finish nail up there.    There was a break near the bottom, as well.  Someone noticed the tote sat over a well in the base, so they used a round headed screw to put the two pieces back together.

I seem to remember something about Stanley making totes like that, just before they started to use plastic ones.

That's interesting Steve. I had read about a two piece plastic one but not wood. Makes you wonder if they were experimenting with it.
