Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners

Featured Replies

Spent several hours today, at the lathe, turning chair parts. I had glued up the blanks over the weekend but just got everything ready to do the actual turning today. Everything is spindle turning.

The chair design is scaled up from a very small child's play chair. I discovered that when you up scale something- the proportions seem wrong. When the chair is finished, I'll post the two side by side and I think the problem will be obvious.

Anyway, I got the 4 legs (front two are different from the back two) and the back outside uprights turned. I don't have a duplicator so everything is done by eye, calipers, and comparisons. To make things a little easier, I made a holder to position the "first" turning next to the second one so I could make visual and caliper comparisons.

Once the first spindle was turned, I mounted it onto the holder. Next the second blank was rough turned and markings for the various details applied.

When it came to sizing the end tenons, I used a couple of mechanics open end wrenches to get the diameters exactly where they should be.

A completed set-

I also got the chair seat laid out and all of the holes drilled using the compound angle drill jig (Sine Plate). Still need to turn 4 spindles for the seat back between the outside uprights. And, of course all these spindles still need sanding- ughhh.

Safe Turning!

I like the idea of putting the first one right behind the one you are turning. I really like your 3/4" caliper. I have a set of those too! LOL!

Hey if it works it works is what I always say. Did I get that from Yogi?
