August 28, 201312 yr comment_9809 I am finally close to finishing the Cedar Chest and putting the hinges on the top tonight. I use the Torsion Hinges from Rockler on the Cedar Chest. Drilled the holes on the top and installed the hinges. Set the top up on the chest the hinges sitting over the back. I turned around to get my drill to pre-drill and attach them to the chest and I heard a crashing noise. I turn around and the top is gone. Pick it up from the floor behind the work bench and now it has some dents in the top and crushes the corner. I mean really. I only have a half inch over hang so I am not sure I can fix this corner. I guess I will be making a new top Thursday night instead of spraying finish. I should have pulled it down to this level while I was getting the drill. Oh well things happen. August 28, 201312 yr comment_9822 John, yikes. Rip off all for edges about 2 inches back, and frame it out, then re rout your profile on it, it'll look cool. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker Report
August 28, 201312 yr comment_9821 Or just rip off the ends 2" back and put bread board ends on it, you don't even need to tongue and groove it, just glue the ends on, then reroute. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker Report

August 28, 201312 yr comment_9819 It is John, and it'll look cool too. Just rip off 2 inches back from the both ends, and glue new pieces up, it'll look stylish and add contrast to the lid. Forget about framing the entire top as in my first post, just do the ends. Technically a top that big should have real bread board ends to prevent warp, but if you have not had any issues with that I wouldn't worry about it, just glue em up.John Moody said: Now that is an idea. August 28, 201312 yr comment_9817 I like John's idea but I'm not sure how you'll handle the lip on the underside of the lid. May have to remove it completely and rebuild it. Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins! Report
August 28, 201312 yr comment_9816 Looks like the lip is nailed on Lew. I hope it's nailed on, if it ever gets banged or split up, you should be able to remove it and replace it.Lewis Kauffman said: I like John's idea but I'm not sure how you'll handle the lip on the underside of the lid. August 29, 201312 yr comment_9811 Yipper. Been there dun that. That's a ding that no simple water & Iron will steam out.If I were going to repair that I'd rip the edge off and glue a nice clean strip on and just router and rebate it into shape. The result would be just as strong ad solid as any other glue up.
