I haven't been involved with this forum in a while. Frankly, I find it difficult to read for some unknown reason. But, I decided to try again.

I post most often at another North Carolina wood working forum. Don't know if it is OK to mention here.

They also support Wounded Warriors though in a different way. They bought a nice 5x9 enclosed trailer and stocked it full of wood working tools, built special wheelchair accessible stands for the lathes and scroll saw and trained about thirty members to work with the Warriors. We go to different locations in the State and give 4 to 6 hour training sessions where the Warriors get to make their own wood working projects.

We are always looking for new ideas for small easily completed projects and ways to expand the program. We are beginning to talk with EMT, firemen and police to see if we can work with them and we have scheduled a youth session to gage interest in building a program for young wood workers.

So, I had a wild idea a little over a year ago to build a chest of drawers and get different wood workers to make the drawer fronts. We talked about themes, I strongly wanted to keep it confined to one theme, but was out voted by the other members and it loosely evolved into a vague NC theme.

Well, now the chest is almost complete and will be auctioned at the Klingspor Extravaganza in Hickory, NC on Saturday October 19. I hope you get a chance to see it there, a lot of people put in some hard work to get it finished and the proceeds will help to continue our work with Wounded Warriors and promoting wood work in general.

Mike, thanks for coming back! Your work is wonderful with our warriors!!!!!!! Our hat off to you guys at North Carolina Woodworking Forum!!! That is a wonderful endeavor you have embarked upon. Thanks so much for coming here and letting us know about the great work you are involved in.

Do you have any images of the chest of drawers you could show us?

Mike, one last question, if you could narrow it down, what do you find difficult about reading our site so we can work to improve the experience here.

Thanks, John. Here is a linked thumbnail that you can click on to visit the gallery of Bill Clemmons who built the chest.

Url clickable thumbnail didn't work so trying something else...

Here's a link to the thread with most of the fronts and discussion of design, problems and changes along the way.

As to your forum being difficult for me to read, i'm not sure why. Maybe the font sizes and layout are just so different from the forums I read the most. I'll try to visit more often, study the layout and try to give you a better answer.

I'm missing something, on any other forum I can type code for %7Boption%7D and have the photo show in the post. What am I doing wrong, how is this forum set up to handle photos?

Mike for the photos, just punch a button in our text editor and you can upload as many photos as you like.

Visit this How To, it's very easy to do, no typing, or anything, you just click a button, browse to the photo on your pc, or you can even upload a photo by clicking on "From a URL" in the uploader, and just copy past the url of the location of the image.

See "How To Upload Photos To A Discussion"

I am checking out the links you provided above now, thanks!

That is going to be one very special chest of drawers Mike, the warmth and the heart that was put into this operation is incredible. It will be a priceless piece of art I feel.

Mike, just brainstorming here, but would you consider it "stealing your creative idea" if we perhaps started something like this here on TPW and auctioned it off to benefit our veterans? Just blue sky thinking here, I could build the carcass and just as you did, have our members pitch in on the drawer fronts. If not a chest of drawers, some other type of community built furnishing would do as well.

I love this concept!!!! What a truly wonderful way to show support from an organization or community of woodworkers.

John, I don't mind, if you would please mention NCWW and give me/us credit for the idea.

I did the same thing with Sam Cappo's idea when he built a tool chest and asked for donations to fill it with hand tools. He gave his tool chest to a returning Vet. I'm still building my tool chest and looking for someone to present it to. I gave him credit for the idea and he mentioned it on his blog.

I think it is the right thing to do. And I'll be glad to help if I can.

Mike, we wouldn't have it any other way, we'll work on it.

Oh wow,, Oh wow, Oh wow somebody just answered my prayers. That piece of furniture is exactly what I've been looking for (albeit I'll modify it to smaller) but I've been looking to do the same thing you guys are doing!!!!!!!!

Here's my first chest done about 15 years ago with my own "custom" drawer fronts

And now I want to do the same thing with that dresser but on a smaller scale.

Got any plans?  It's just for me.

Wishing you much luck with it Mike, keep us posted if you can.

ning-img-2588t-9746-4.jpg?width=721Well, here is what we have so far, there are still 4 more fronts on the way. Only one of the plain ones at the bottom will stay. I made the shadow box for Alan Dewey's chess pieces.

I used tiger maple for the shadow box, birch ply for the back, ribbon sapele for the veneer background and blood wood for the pull. The corners are miter dovetailed, a first for me. They were a real challenge in that size. When the other fronts come in we will get a pro to shoot photos.

Do you have plans for that mike? half of that is what i'm looking to build.

  • Author

No, I didn't build the cabinet.

Mike it's a piece of art man, absolutely gorgeous. And the shadow box aint half bad either!!! :)

I am sure it's going to bring in some serious bids for the cause, I am very proud of the work you guys perform, awesome job!!!!!

Hi

Way to go Mike! I'll bet you guys get great $s for that piece. If only we all (me?) could/would do as much as you it would be a way better world. I thank and salute you.

Regards,

Jack

What a wonderful piece for a great cause.

Thanks, buddy!
