Retired in South Carolina

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I retired from the Air Force in 1998.  I have always been a DIYer and wanted to try woodworking. I traveled an hour (one-way) every week to the wood hobby shop at Shaw AFB for six months to be sure my interest wasn't fleeting. It wasn't and I have had my own shop for about 8 years.

I have been adding to it as money allowed, frequently through Craigslist finds, woodworking shows and the barter system. I took over our two car garage (detached) which my husband wanted back so a friend of mine and I built a new shop attached to the back of the garage. The new shop is 24' x 50' so I consider myself very fortunate. I am still about half in the old shop and half in the new. We live WAY out in the country so noise is not an issue.

I've built outdoor furniture, jewelry boxes, display cabinets and birdhouses. Some I have sold but most I give away. I am very bad about taking pictures of my items but I do have a couple which I will post. The only turnings I do are pens and similar items. My clients (I have about 30 private computer clients) want pens so that is why I make them. However, I know little about turning and have never turned a bowl.

I taught at a prison for nine years but now teach with adult education. I hope to get back into the prison system (as a teacher) in the future.

My husband and I have been married 33 years and we currently have 11 four-legged kids--3 dogs and 8 special-needs cats. My husband is also retired Air Force.

Mike Davis mentioned that NCWW participates in the Wounded Warrior program with our trailer. I am a volunteer in that effort and am also a member of NCWW.

I look forward to being a part of this group, as well.

Susan, don't count out eBay in your tool shopping.  If you look around there are bargains to be found.  BTW, I was a 46250 AFSC.  Nuclear

Wow! Your shop is bigger than our house! I am looking forward to seeing some of your projects and some pictures of that shop.

30 private computer clients, eh. Hope they are nothing like the ones I help. Get phone calls at any hour, any holiday (including Christmas) and expect to have the problem solved over the phone!

Glad to have you here!!!

Susan, what a great way to have a hobby, a big shop, in the country, and you are also helping our Wounded Warriors!!!! Wonderful!!!! I am glad Mike introduced you to us. You are at home here, thank you very much for joining.

Now, I must say that I have taken up all of our two car garage portion and then some of the third car part as well, but unfortunately I cannot expand as you did! And my wife wants to park her truck under some cover! We were able to park our vehicles in our garage the first month we moved here about 12 years ago, then my tools and machinery crept in, and that was all she wrote.

When I retire in 10 or 15 years, our dream is to move to the country, way from the rabble, and we are going to build a big shop to accommodate her love of crafts, and mine for woodworking.

Thanks for being here Susan!

Well as a turner of pens and other things I am glad to see yet another turner of pens, I am looking forward to seeing some of your work. As Ron said, Ebay is a place to look for used tools some are bargains while others are not so much, it just takes a bit of time to find that tool that screams at you to take it home. :)
