September 2, 201312 yr rehab day!  got the Great Neck/ Stanley #9-1/2 all shined up, after wire brushing all that #@@#$# clear-coat off.  Iron was almost sharp, but wasn't square to the sides.  Worked on that for awhile. Rusty Boy needed a LOT of wire wheel/brush work. The iron was in the shape of a wave across the edge, grinder work along with the other crooked iron. Had to trudge back upstairs to get a small tub of water to cool the metal. Then the sandpaper and stones.  Painted the bare metal on Rusty Boy, and allowed it to dry. Brass all shined up, BLO on the wooden knob. Iron for the now black plane does have the corners back a bit.  A few more looks at these two?Front views.  Might look a bit more like a plane should? And the back porches.  As for a test drive?GN 9-1/2 on some pine, as a warm up to set the ironthen some Black Walnut scraps. Same with the Rusty Boy, first the warm upand then on to the good stuff. Depth setting for this type of plane is by hammer.Between each plane's trip, leveled the "playing field" with a couple larger planesStanley Four Square Junior Jack, from the late 1920s.  (No, I did not buy it new..) followed bya late 40s Millers Falls #8, which is the same as a Stanley #3 in size.   Just getting a few a work out today... September 3, 201312 yr Cool! An acquaintance gave me a plane like "Rusty Boy" as payment for helping him with his computer. The one he gave me had the cap piece painted deep red. The front is cast with made in USA but there isn't any manufacturer's name. There is a small portion of a decal at the rear but not enough left for me to make any identification. September 3, 201312 yr Author A red cap was either a stanley one, or a Stanley Handyman/Defiance one.  Iron might have a stamp on it, like a H1220?  "H" is for Handyman Tools.   have not seen a wheel like on rusty boy.  Most of the other brands I know, but this one is different.   The only red seems to have been the knob, as I found traces of red paint inside the bottom of the knob.   Not too bad a little plane though...Planer?
