September 2, 201312 yr Hi all! Since I know that not everyone has facebook, I figured I'd show off my latest pen here. I was told that it is called Vera Wood so that's what I am going with. It has been treated with CA glue as all of my pens are now unless otherwise requested. It is now listed in my Etsy shop and hopefully wont take long to sell Another thing that I had been working on is called an Egg cup. I m not sure if i ever showed the completed item. Here it is, complete with an oak egg, The cup is made from Black Walnut. The egg is not quite complete but at least it gives a good idea of the way things are supposed to look. Thanks for viewing, please turn safely. You can loose a lot more than just hair if you don't. My hair got to close to the lathe turned on with wet CA glue when I bent over to pick up a paper towel that I had dropped. It didn't hurt a lot but it could have been a lot worse. September 3, 201312 yr Sharp looking pen, Charles, and cool looking egg and cup, too! I have to believe that method of getting a hair cut might be less expensive but a lot more painful! Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
September 3, 201312 yr Author LOL to be honest I barely felt more than just a tug and a twitch of pain, Less than a pin prick but I have to agree, there are indeed better ways to cut hair LOLLewis Kauffman said: Sharp looking pen, Charles, and cool looking egg and cup, too! September 3, 201312 yr Fine looking pen. The CA method of finishing is great, isn't it? Never heard of Vera wood. It's pretty stuff, though. How about a turned and pierced egg, ala Faberge? That would be a worthy addition to that nice cup. Heck, you've already got the egg turned. :-) Hard part's done, right? :-)))You need a "Buzz cut"!  Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 3, 201312 yr Author Thanks  I hadn't heard of Vera wood either until someone on FB told me. Sure I could hollow the egg if that is what you mean. I would have to have a mighty small tool to do it though. Always a reason to better my turning and hollowing skills . I will be starting on my ornament making again very soon and plan on adding some hollowed ones this time around, like the birdhouse types, I haven't made any of those yet I'll have to glue up some blanks with the flat wood I have and see how that goes.Gene Howe said: Fine looking pen. September 3, 201312 yr My SIL does intricate filigree work on Emu eggs. She uses a Dremel. Of course, her eggs are already hollow. :-) And, I suppose the bigger eggs are easier to work. Getting a wooden piece's walls thin enough might be a trick, too.Would be an interesting blog, though.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' September 3, 201312 yr Author I may have to invest in a Dremel tool again. I had one many years ago but it was lost in moving, like almost everything else in my life LOL. It would indeed be a great way to hollow out the egg if it was too small for conventional hollowing tools.I know someone on FB that does natural egg work and her work is spectacular. I really wish I had more access to different sizes of wood without having to ship it to me, there is so much I could be doing if I had a good source of wood, even if i had to glue it together first.Gene Howe said:My SIL does intricate filigree work on Emu eggs.
