September 9, 201312 yr Ron, Here is a great video from WoodCraft on using the WoodRiver Block Plane that you received. It goes from setting it up to actually using it.I hope this helps with your questions. I am visual person myself and seeing something makes more sense than reading about it.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
September 9, 201312 yr Excellent John! After watching that video Ron, if you have any further questions, or need clarification, please chime in here. We don't typically send our members off to videos or other sites, because you can do that, but in this case, Moody hit the nail on the head with this video. Produced by Woodcraft for that exact plane you have, it don't get better then that!!! But we are here for you if you have any further questions! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
September 9, 201312 yr Oh, and by the way, do not feel embarrassed!!!!! Most of us go a lifetime with power tools, finally realizing that getting closer to the wood with hand tools is really more enjoyable. Hopefully this will set you off on a creative and productive tangent with your new plane!!! There is a reason why we sent you the plane Ron, you may not understand it now, but you may in the near future! There is nothing more enjoyable then hand planing or joining a piece of wood in your shop, the entire experience is relaxing, and rewarding, it truly is, enjoy! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
September 9, 201312 yr Author thanks guys, now it makes more sense on how to use it,now just have to wait till it gets cooler to go use it in the shop, haha just too HOT in the shop right now, only go in the early morning or late evenin when its cooler.
September 10, 201312 yr It'll also help if you get that blade professionally sharpened by someone who knows how."A sharp blade is half the battle, reading wood grain is the other half".
September 20, 201312 yr Grab it and shove it across some wood. Watch what happens. Try to make different things happen. sharpen the livin beejeebus outta it and polish the edge to a clean whistling mirror keen enuf' to split atoms and try that.Purdy soon the essence will settle in.
September 22, 201312 yr Ron Like it was stated, once you start getting into it and getting the feel. Please chime in here and keep us posted on your progress, and any questions you may have. Warning, once you get bit by the hand tool bug, it gets contagious. Mike Great advice. I know I learned the hard way . John Morris There is definitely a lot to be said about using hand tools over power tools. Seems to me when done by hand, you have more pride in the piece you are working on. Not to mention satisfaction. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
