September 11, 201312 yr A friend of mine has a birthday coming up.I usually get him an antique wood working tool but this year I decided to add something extra in return for a large slab of Spalted Maple. I had a couple of roughed out blanks of Honey Locust. The Locust came from a former student. He cut the tree several years ago. It had become diseased and he was afraid it might blow over on his home. His home was built in 1796 or 1797 so you can understand his concern. The tree was getting close to 100 years old. Here's some pictures of the finished bowl. I didn't take any shots during the turning process- sorry. I was actually trying to reshape my bowl gouge to a fingernail grind and using the blank as a test piece as I shaped it. The bowl is about 1.5" high and about 11" in diameter. It has some interesting grain patterns and some dark stains. The stain wasn't obvious until I turned away some of the wood. One area near the knot has an almost chatoyance appearance on the top and bottom of the piece. This was finished with the same stuff I used on the mortar- Ty Fine Finishes. I think I may have mentioned this before but here is a link to a site with a wide range of free turning information- videos, pix, etc. http://www.woodturningvideosplus.com/woodturning-education-articles.html Well, I'm gathering up the materials for the lathe duplicator I mentioned last week. Hopefully I can remember to take lots of pix as I go thru the build. Here's a drawing of what I'm using as a starting point. PLEASE REMEMBER- this is NOT my design! Floor spacing/machine location are factors in requiring some design modifications. You can checkout the young man, who did the designing, at http://thiswoodwork.com/. Safe Turning! September 11, 201312 yr Looks like you got a good grind on the gouge. I love the grain in that piece. Did you sign it with pen or did you burn it on the bottom?I like the duplicator idea. I am going to watch and see how yours turns out. I really would like to have one.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

September 11, 201312 yr Lew, Nice bowl! I'm lazy, I got an earlier version of this. I found it at a garage sale a few years ago, the seller didn't know what it was or what it was for. If I remember correctly I paid $15.00 for it  Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host

September 12, 201312 yr Lew, No I wasn't, the seller set the price. The above photo's from one now listed on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Delta-Rockwell-Lathe-Duplicator-11-12-Woodworking-Turning-Craftsman-Pattern-/290975439936?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43bf7cdc40#ht_77wt_1402 So I handed over the money, and rode off into the sunset. September 12, 201312 yr Heck that isn't a bad price for the one on eBay. It is hard to find one for that amount of money. But you got a great deal at 15.00. I keep looking, but haven't found any like that. Thanks Lew, I couldn't tell if it was sharpie or woodburning.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
September 12, 201312 yr John, I found mine better than 10 years ago, before the prices went crazy. The person having the garage sale didn't know what it was, they found it up in the rafter storage space in the garage. They bought the property from the previous owners estate. It's the earlier style with the rail like the Delta 8" saws fence had. ( geared c-channel style rail )  Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host

September 13, 201312 yr That bowl looks great Lew! I have found my new wood of choice, everyone seems to love Honey Locust. Even the bowl I made has been spoken for once I get the bottom completed and my sanding process on it down, It wont be as hard as the black cherry bowl because there are no edges to bump against. I probably wont make another bowl like that one again.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
