I've run across some pretty inferior imported plywood at HD. But that was A/C stuff. When I need the good stuff, I go to the lumber dealers. 

I can't really visualize the full ramifications of the governments actions here, but as with all other govt. actions, it's likely not good.

I would hope for a higher quality as Lew stated, but we still have to have an American grade that can compete with the foreign.

Just yesterday I had to buy some 1/4" Oak plywood at Home Depot.  What cost me ~$20 a month ago is not over $26 a sheet.  That being said, as Lew stated, the quality was much better than the crud I was seeing from China AND South America.  

I agree with John in that the US grades still have to compete.  Let's hope the dumping can be overcome by American manufacturer's.

I will still, however, buy imported Baltic Birch plywood for projects that need the stability of 1/4" material.  (Gotta keep the Scandinative countries happy too)

Well on the up side (for me) I don't use much veneer ply at all.  And when I do I buy American not chinese.

On the down side the costs that the woodworkers and their retail customers will  be seeing are going to crush the industry.

On the up side expect to see a lot of equipment for sale at fire sale prices.

On the down side expect the unemployed tradesmen to have a very hard time of it.

Sounds like a blessing for IKEA and Home Depot kitchen cabinets  all around.

But - - Don't we want to stop Chinese Dumping?

Seems to me a whole industry has developed around a falsehood.  They became dependent on materials that were priced unrealistically low.

The upshot of that all screeching to a halt seems a bitter jagged pill to swallow but  come on it  was all built around dumping.

I mean what if the local funeral parlors had developed a booming huge robust trade burying people because of all the murders and one day the communities hired serious police who stopped it. Would we weep for the morticians unions?

Oh wonderful, our government is at it again.

Just hoping something positive comes of all of this. But dealing with the government, I don't know how this will come out.

dumping is like globalization only worse because  it is all on the terms of and by the orders of another gubbermit in another country with little or no concern for the secondary or tertiary effects of the dumping

So when  the Chinese gubbermit dumps in the US, the goal is to drive US businesses out of business.
If they do it long enough ( and they have) the US based competition just dies off. The old mills and factories are broken up and sold off and scrapped. The buildings are demolished or converted to condominiums or shopping malls or just left to decompose. The result is that in order to start over you gotta handle the really high cost buy-in for all new machinery and buildings. OUCH~!!

So while I agree that gubbermint interference is an evil, it becomes a necessary evil when other gubermints are interfering..
