2 piece Seed Pot hollow form

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, here's my latest, it's what I found out is called a seed pot. Indians use to store the next years seeds for the farm in these. The small hole would prevent rodents from eating the seeds by sealing the small hole for the winter. This was turned entirely using Glaser (American made) Mini QR tools. It was done in 2 hours & ready for finish. While it looks like one piece, it's actually done in 2 pieces. The top is turned with a face plate to do the outside. A tenon is turned on the top to hold it when turning the inside, then turned away when the 2 pieces are glued together. Pretty much the same way for the bottom. It measures 11" in diameter & 3-3/4" tall. Please enjoy.

Bill, this is completely beautiful, I Love that gnarled area on the side, cool character.

I am not understanding the two piece process, how do you make it two piece, and seamless?

Love it Bill i am going to have to try some like this some day. I need a better supply of wood though, I have 2 whole boxes of spindle and pen material but only a half dozen or so pieces of wood that would make one of these, and then only real small ones. I need to find a lumber mill nearby that I can visit now and then for wood supply.

AWESOME!!!!!  How much you want for it with a turned lid?

Absolutely beautiful, just when I think I am good at turning I am humbled!!! I do understand the concept you use in turning it, I hope you won't mind if I give it a try at one. What type of wood is it? It looks like burl maple but I am not sure. Again, beautiful job.

Now that is one fantastic piece!

Love to see you blog this process!

Thanks everyone, the wood I think is spalted Maple. I call it Baywood (ebay) Now I want to combine this technique with my spiral technique. So basically make a spiral piece with this form. Wish me luck. 8-)

Good luck Bill!!!!!!

It's a beauty! Awesome shape, can't believe it's made with two pieces, the gorgeous grain patterns looked continuous and great finish. Impressive and excellent work!

Pretty.very pretty.

I've never tried turning like that.

What kind of wall thickness do you shoot for and  then what does one normally obtain?

In my mind's eye I imagine that if such a turning were sawn in half that it'd be  a thin shell with the inside pretty much conforming with the outer surface.

Is this right?

Correct, it's about 1/8 to 3/16" thick & finished inside & out.

Thanks John, I'll need it. Thanks for the featured discussion too. I'll document the next one. Just ordered 2 blanks.

Looking forward to seeing the process!

Well, sorry guys, I'm on a more pressing project for the time being. I have to build 2 boxes and a full size Dalek in time for the CES show in Las Vegas in January. I'll post pics of those projects once there is something worth looking at.
