October 2, 201312 yr  The duplicator is officially on the "back burner" until I can come up with some major design improvements. On the positive side- as it is, it is the perfect fluting device for any round column. Safe turning. October 3, 201312 yr Author The young man who did the original, used a large off centered "follower" to interface with the profile pattern. Due to limited shop space around the lathe, I modified his design to use 5/8" hardwood dowels to create the "follower" assembly. Turns out that the hardwood dowel flexes too much. Now I'm torn between trying my design in aluminum rod or using his design and learning to live with the "off center" setup. The other disappointment was the quality of the turning surface. I expected it to be at least as "smooth" as the current process I use to create my rolling pins. I use a handheld platform with a 1/4" square machine tool stock ground to a rounded end. This setup works well for the pins but nothing else. I was looking for a method to turn multiple objects with repeatability. I just need to step away for a bit and ponder the options. Besides, I want to turn a couple of items from a slab of spalted maple I recently procured and I have been planning a box for my good cooking knives. Something in walnut, hand cut dovetails and maybe some storage for a touch up stone. Thanks for the interest, Larry.
