Goooooooood morning, Patriot Woodworkers

Hope all had a wonderful and fulfilling weekend as I did.  Didn't get a whole lot of sawdust done, but helped the wife put on a Pet Fest for her Duluth Historical Society.  I will post the url to pictures as soon as I get the site finished.

Did get a little done on the military plaques - getting ready for two upcoming shows.

How about y'all?  Please let us know - AND - post pictures for us.

LOF on the Polaris, disassembled an oak dining table and stored it, assembled a newly refinished maple table, finished all the mowing along the fence lines and trimmed around the house, shop and out buildings, winterized the pull behind mower, wheeled weed whacker and hand held one and got them all stored for the winter. Got two more slabs dadoed for the jewelry chests. 

Now, something's amiss with the Polaris. Seems to be slipping in and out of gear. Will take it in to the dealer tomorrow. 

If nothing else breaks, I should get some shop time today.

Since my wife's work schedule is so hectic, we have been planning nothing, or very little, for our Saturdays. She is typically out the door heading to her classroom by 7am and doesn't get home until 6pm. After crashing for an hour or so she will do computer work to get stuff ready for the next day and then we get to bed about 11pm. So this Saturday we slept in and had a nice quiet breakfast out at Chick-Fil-A reading the paper and being online (me with my Macbook and her on the iPad). Then we drove down to Old Town Orange and walked around the antique and consignment shops for a couple of hours nad picked up a couple of things before heading back home. Sunday morning we went to another church for a change of pace which is small with less than 100 people there and the worship team of 3 people singing with 1 of them on the acoustic guitar. It was very laid back. Watched the NASCAR race and some football and then went our regular church for the evening service. So it was a very nice quiet weekend for us. I have been really struggling to get motivated to jump back into the woodworking. I have many projects to get done, but it just seems other things keep getting in the way.

I think I'm going to stop substituting at school on Fridays. I realize those teachers need a mental health day pretty often but we have neighbors that lay-in-wait for me to come home and ambush me before I get in the door. Now for any teachers out there, you know that I haven't been to the bathroom since I left the house at 6:30am and it's now after 4pm.

I think this the only way they can get my attention. In the basement shop, with machines running and hearing protection, I don't hear the phone or door bell. If Mimi's not home then they cannot load on another "project" for the weekend.

I really hate being a selfish person. But, I'm running out of wood, hardware, supplies. Not to mention the cost of running shop equipment. You know it's bad when they comment to your wife that it is so nice having a neighbor who can make all our projects.

This time I'm presented with a 4' x4' piece of twisted and scuffed 1/2" underlayment plywood.

Them- "would you cut this out to look like an 'Outhouse' door and frame. It should open, have a little turn handle to keep it shut."

Me- "well, I guess. What is its' purpose."

Them- "it's a decoration for the bathroom wall."

Me- "how large?"

Them- "I don't know, whatever you think."

Them- "It would really be nice if we could store some stuff inside of it."

Me- "You mean like a cupboard?"

Them- "Yes, like a place for toothpaste, brushes and stuff like that."

Me- "I don't think there's enough wood to make a complete cupboard."

Them- "Just a minute, I have another piece of wood." (Rushes off and returns with a 6' piece of 3/4" x 3/4" piece of pine.)

Me- "OK"

Me- "How are you going to finish it?" (BIG mistake on my part)

Them- "Stain it or maybe paint it. What do you think?"

Me- "Paint."

Them- "The door needs to have a "moon" crescent cut into it."

Them- "And below the door it needs to have a little piece of wood"

Me- "Sill?"

Them- "I guess."

Me- "OK."

Them- "And the door needs to have long stripes."

Me- "You mean it should look like it is made from boards??"

Them- "I guess."

Me (with a bladder about to burst)- "OK, when do you need it?"

Them- "whenever you can get to it."

Me- "OK." (Backing towards the front door)

Them- "Do you think you'll have it finished this coming week?"

Me- "We'll see." (Yelling over my shoulder as I heading to the bathroom).

Exasperated!! Wood, glue, hinges, shelf supports, hardware!

OK, I feel better now.

Been there, done that.

But then I learned the magic word..... "NO!"

It only takes me an average of 5 times that I have to tell a specific person "NO!" for them to stop asking me to make them something. Of course then they start asking me if I know someone else who would be able to make it for them and it starts the 5 "NO!" process over again.

One of the many joys of being a woodworker.

"Sure, how much are you willing to pay?"  Stops em every time un less its a daughter or daughter in law.  Then you're on the hook regardless.
