ok need help want to make a nice Knife block to hold all the knives we have, wife hates havin to look for them in the drawer,(has cut herself a few times)or putting them in the knife holder we bought from store.so need whats the best wood to make it from, and a design for the block,

Ron, I've made 2 knife blocks.  One of maple and one of oak.  You will definitely want to make it from hardwood.  As for the style, count your knives.  The number of knives will dictate the style.  Take a run to Kohl's or a similar store and check out their designs.  They're pretty easy to make.  I don't really have a pattern per se.  Here's one to look at.

I use these

ning-magnabar-8272-81.jpg?width=721Called a magna bar.  I mount them on my cabinet fronts and they are very strong magnetically.  Got one 10 years old and it's still holding knives tight.
