Decided to make a little three board project, called a shooting board.    Got a piece of 2x10 scrap and a rabbet plane to make a bunch of shavingsning-dscf00324-8265-51.jpg?width=750big tub of curlie-q's  , and the plane in actionning-dscf00354-8265-43.jpg?width=750A wards #78.  Had to take the depth stop off rabbet was a bit too deep for it, if i can get one photo of it to load, that is (#$###$ dial ups)ning-dscf00364-8265-41.jpg?width=750Making a track for a plane body to ride on.   Got it just about wide enough, then decided to add a rabbet on the end for a stop.ning-dscf00375-8265-9.jpg?width=750Marked a square line (on the second try) and then sawed it to depth, a chisel to knock off the waste, and then a few trips with the rabbet plane.   Found some oak scrap that would be long enough to provide the end stop, and a cleat to clamp it to the bench with.   Screwed the piece into the end rabbet, and then sawed off the rest.   Screwed the rest under the main board.  ning-dscf00395-8265-77.jpg?width=750and used a block plane to square the stop to the track.  All out of scrap wood, plus a few screws that were on-hand.  ning-dscf00405-8265-43.jpg?width=750cleaning up the end of a piece a Cherry.  Them "daylight shop light bulbs" turn any thing light coloured into a bright white, lots of glare.  Maybe an hour or two, not counting a few round trips up and down the stairs.    My electrodes kept coming off, and one trip was for a chuck kep for the drill.

I am pooped!

There's something I've always wondered about this device but was afraid I'd show my ignorance if I asked. But, here goes-

I think I know what a shooting board is used for- to precisely trim the end of a piece. But doesn't the plane blade also remove some of the vertical edge of the rabbet, it slides in, when trimming the work piece? And if that happens, isn't the accuracy of the shooting board  compromised?

Then again, maybe I don't know what it is used for!

The "trick" is to have the part being trimmed to stick out just a hair so the plane rides on the part.    Plus, as long as you don't start the plane off on the edge, it won't dig in.   Start it with the iron just short of the part.

Thanks, that makes sense now.

Seemed to take my mind off of things for a while, anyway.

Daughter's getting a lot of help from all sorts of people, kids now have more clothes then they lost.   Other things will need to be replaced, and another place to stay found.   They are living in a hotel for now.

Thinking Imight need to add a darker finish to the bench stuff, just so they show up better in the camera's eyes?
