October 23, 201312 yr Not too much for this week- yet another visit from relatives.... During the making of the lathe duplicator, I used a rolling pin blank to test the "profile follower" device. Well it had way too much play in the material. The pin blank wasn't symmetrical and there were gouges along the length. I couldn't bring myself to toss the thing so I put it back on the lathe and turned it as I usually do. To remove all of the imperfections, required the diameter to be much less than what I usually make but maybe someone with smaller hands might find it useful. While I had the lathe set up, I rounded several blanks in preparation for tapering. Still have a few more to turn round. I try to make "production runs" when doing rolling pin. Glue up and square the basic blanks. Cut/glue the diagonal inserts. Turn the blanks round. Taper the round blanks. This process seems to be more efficient. Pictured, rite to left, Sapele/Walnut/Maple, Maple/Walnut, Maple/Walnut/Cherry (the smaller salvaged one) and a goofy one that has a bunch of pieces glued up just to see what it would look like. My next batch will be primarily Walnut. I cut some pieces to glue up the blanks. Walnut can have a wide range of colors within the same board so trying to get an consistent look might not be possible using the 2 board glue up. I may have to get some 8/4 or 10/4 walnut and cut the blanks from a solid piece. Safe Turning. October 24, 201312 yr I love those Lew, artful rollling pins, the celtic knot is my favorite design on these. beautiful work. Did you finish the duplicator yet? John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
October 24, 201312 yr Author Thanks, John. I'm working on changing all of the "linkage" and mounts for the profile following portion from wood to metal. Then I'll need to retest/recalibrate the entire duplicator when finished. It's kind of slow going right now- cutting all of the metal with a hack saw!John Morris said: I love those Lew, artful rollling pins, the celtic knot is my favorite design on these. beautiful work.
