October 28, 201312 yr comment_7966 with the way my luck has been, is getting a bit "fun" Had a 5' long piece of 1x6 pine.  Decided to cut it into three pieces for a tabletop.   Grabbed a decent saw and started to saw along (almost) a line.   Saw skipped out and slid along the thumb.  Nice part about handsaws, they will stop when they hit a finger. Threw THAT saw back onto the bench, and started another saw ( I seem to have a few) this one tried to cut to the right, enough so i had to flip the board over and cut from the other direction.   Somehow got three parts into the clamps, and almost flat. Took the new panel out of the clamps, and then squared the ends up.  Circ. saw this time.  No thumbs were hit, either.   Then a block plane to smooth those saw marks up.  Flattened the top a bit, as some of the glue lines were uneven.  Knocked everything down flat, with a #6 panel plane.  Then smoothed things up with the Wood River #4 V3.  Found some end grain like stuff around one of the knots. WR smoothed that out a bit.  Just started on cutting some leg "stock".  had three short 2x4s, painted blue.  Hey, they were free. Circ. saw to rip down the "middle" kind of missed the middle part. Went with the skinnier half, and laid the others out with it.  jack plane worked nicely on saw marks, so far.  About that thick blue paint....SCRUB PLANE!  After a few strokes, it was WHAT blue paint?   Then a smooth plane to even things out. One leg is now awaiting mortises.  Three to go.  Might get them done this week.  Thinking a lower shelf might work out.  I do have a panel already glued up, might as well use it.  Say, about halfway up the legs??  Should be fun.  Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use... Report

October 28, 201312 yr Author comment_7969 The other three legs are awaiting their mortises as well.   None are exactly the same size.   maybe the two skinny one out front, with a forced perspective of the fatter two?  Aprons will be next, after I size the bottom shelf to fit the legs.   No real rush... ps: camera's three triple a batteries died last night. will have to wait until this weekend for a few photos...Planer? October 31, 201312 yr Author comment_7968 Have two legs now ready for mortises for the aprons.   Went to check for sizes of the aprons, and found they are 3" too short!   Drat!  NOW, I have to go out and BUY a new board for that.  New batteries are in the camera-ooski!   LOTS of photos now in it, too!   Need to find a way to download them onto this Public Library computer, though.   A slot is getting cut about halfway up the legs, at a 45 degree angle.   Corners of the bottom shelf are already cut off to match.  Just two saw cuts onto the leg, and a 1/2" wide chisel to knock the waste out.  Outside corner on the legs are being champfered to about the width of a screw's head.   Will secure the shelf to the legs with a spot of glue, and a screw.Table's top MAY get a fancy-schmanzy edge treatment.  Think shape!   Something besides a straight line on the edges.  Been using quite a few planes doing this little table (18' x 18" top) and it is nice to see wide, paper thin shavings go flying through the air! Some people pay to go to a movie, I just go down stairs to the Dungeon for a show....Planer?
