WWP Ships Care Packages

2013%20oct%20newsletter%20video.jpg

Through WWP, patriotic Americans like you have been helping warriors by providing them with WWP backpacks in hospitals. Warriors arrive from the battlefield with nothing. These packs, filled with essential care and comfort items such as clothing, toiletries, and more, let them know someone cares.

“I didn’t know which way was up and was severely wounded … at Walter Reed [Army Medical Center] I got this backpack ... and I instantly identified with the warrior on the top of the logo being carried off [the battlefield by another warrior].” — Dan Nevins, Wounded Warrior

Dear Patriot Woodworkers,

There’s a big difference between hearing and listening. I’m reminded of that fact each time I talk with injured veterans you help through your support of Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP).

Hearing wounded service members’ war stories gives you some idea of the trauma they endured. But you really have to listen to understand the type of help they need to recover. At WWP, we listen. Through WWP programs like WWP Packs, Physical Health & Wellness, and the Independence Program, we are listening to warriors and making a difference in their lives.

You can show warriors you understand their needs and have not forgotten them by giving your best gift today to sustain these life-changing programs.

In honor of our nation’s wounded heroes,

 Helping Warriors Break Through Isolation

Many injured veterans surfed for the first time with the help of Wounded Warrior Project and several other organizations. There were 37 veterans and about 100 volunteers who helped wounded veterans reach beyond their limits.

“It's kind of an emotional thing for me, because I don't get out of my house much because of my post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” said Iraq war veteran Michael Chapasko. “I'm nervous around people, but being here with this support group, it's the most amazing thing ever. And then getting my first big wave out there. It's such a rush out there.”

 How Disabilities Become Strengths

Jeremy Muncert returned from Iraq haunted by his experiences, like many of his brothers in arms. This led to choices that changed his life forever and left him even more isolated and alone. Jeremy suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a car crash. He had to relearn to walk, talk, eat, and breathe on his own. Susan, his mother, had to quit her job to become his full-time caregiver. They needed help.

Wounded Warrior Project stepped in with the Independence Program, which pairs veterans with moderate to severe TBI and other neurological conditions with specialists in their community who can help them pursue their interests.

The Independence Program changed Jeremy’s life. A couple of times each week, he meets with local specialists who understand his disability and take him to workout, go shopping, and attend classes at the community college, where he is studying business administration.

“I have many challenges still ahead of me,” Jeremy said. “However, I do not look at my injuries and deficits as disabilities. I look at them as strengths to make me stronger and to make me a better person.”
