November 4, 201312 yr hello all: I picked this up this weekend and not sure what I want todo with it.. looking for suggestions. IT is a Sargent handplane that is still covered in packing grease.. so it brand new.. Should I clean it up and put to use or shall i do something else with it.. I have attached 3 pictures.. Thanks Neil
November 4, 201312 yr Neil, I didn't see a number for the plane on any of the pictures you posted. If it is a Sargent and new, then new would be 1964 since that seems to be when the last Sargent planes were produced. After 1955 the only planes that carried the Sargent Brand were the #1409, #1414 Bench Planes and the #600 Aluminum smooth plane. The Hercules Golden Cutter was releases by Sargent in 1950 to compete with Stanley's Defiance brand. Sargent manufactured planes for Sears, Roebuck and Company un the name Craftsman and Dunlap. If you can post some pictures of the number or the Sargent logo and we may be able to help you date it. That might make a difference in what you decide to do with it, although I have an Stanley No. 18 block plane made in 1918 that I love to use today. Here is a link to a page with Sargent Planes by the number and picture. Also when posting pictures you can click on the second icon from the left on the bar above where you are typing your message and browse to the location on your computer, double click on the picture and it will place the picture in your post instead of a link. Thanks for sharing.
