November 19, 201312 yr comment_7459 Well, I made a trip back to the landfill. The borough is always bulldozing the discarded brush and trees to allow room for dumping. I managed to find the tree(s) from which I made the spoons as well as definitive (almost) identification! Not certain the classification of “Pussy WIllow†this is, apparently there are a bunch. Got a couple more pieces while I was there. Anyway, thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. I really appreciate the help! November 21, 201312 yr comment_7464 here is a picture of cherry bark, it looks very much like the bark y9ou posted in the other thread. I don't think that pussy willow forms much of a tree. There is goat willow ( French pussy willow) which forms a sort of bushy tree-ish little thing with slender trunks in a bunch. But not many trees have catkins like that you posted here that I've seen. Report
November 21, 201312 yr Author comment_7463 Had I been a little more observant in my own neighborhood , I could have solved the mystery more quickly. When I saw the catkins at the land fill, my mind immediately jumped on the "pussy willow" idea. Later that day, as I was walking, I got to thinking about how cold it was. Wait a minute! Pussy willow trees have the catkins in the spring- not the fall! Pretty stupid, I thought as I walked by the neighbor's house grumbling to myself. Then, right there in front to me was a Magnolia Tree- full of catkins. What a dumb a$$, I am! Mystery POSITIVELY solved!!Cliff said: here is a picture of cherry bark, it looks very much like the bark y9ou posted in the other thread.
