Making some Children's Knock Down Rocking Chairs PIP

Featured Replies

Well, for the next couple of days I will be working on getting some more children's knock down rocking chairs done. I have a friend that bought 2 of them before for his grandkids and he needs 2 more as he has 2 more grandkids that will be born in January. Also my niece gave birth this morning to her first child, so I have to send one out to her in Phoenix, AZ.

I had 2 sheets of 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood 5'x5' that I had to trace out and rough cut all the pieces. It only took me 6 hours of tracing, cutting out with a jig saw and then get the garage/shop cleaned up so my wife could park her car in it tonight. I am bushed and sore, but it was a good day.

Here is what the chairs will look like when completed. They are 6 pieces that interlock together like a puzzle with a locking key in the back.

This is a photo of a typical layout on a 5'x5' sheet of plywood. I can get 2 full chairs and a couple extra  pieces to minimize scrap. I have to cut them out with a jig saw about 1/8" outside of the traced lines and then mount them to the templates with double side woodturners tape and run them on the router table with a pattern bit w/bearing. After that is done then I use a round over bit on the edges on both sides.

Here are all the pieces I cut out today.

Hey we are back at it!!!!! That is a very well planned and impressive layout Allen. Do you still sell the templates for these chairs?

Hey Allen, I got to thinking, isn't that setting a bad example for children, making children knock down rocking chairs?  I wouldn't want those kids in my house!!!!

John,

I stopped selling the hardboard templates as they were just too expensive to ship due to the size of the packaging. It would cost me about $16-$20 just to ship them depending on where they went. So I have been selling the paper templates for $20 which includes shipping and they ship out nicely in a large envelope with a CD with instructions and pictures. You just have to unfold the templates and lay them out a bit and then use spray adhesive to glue them down to a sheet of hardboard and then cut them out. I started out originally with paper templates and it just takes one day in the shop to make them and then you have them forever.
