Trying To Finish A Cornhole Board Set

Featured Replies

Im hoping to finish my cornhole board set this weekend. But i'm not sure on how i should go about painting them. I've some spray paint in the colors I want. But should use a primer and what kind/brand should I be looking for? My paints are Skillcraft oil enamel and Sherwin Williams paint for metal and wood.

Thanks,

Lee

I use spray cans for a lot of my scroll saw cuttings and other things. Prime it first and if you have end grain that will show, make up a weak mix of wood glue and water to seal the end grain so the spray won't soak in too much. After it drys, sand it lightly, prime, and then give it 2 or 3 coats of your color.

Hope this helps you out and be sure to post some pictures when your done!

Lee, forgive my ignorance, what is a Cornhole Board? Sounds fun to build whatever it is!!!! And what material do you use to make them?

Here you go John.  I make quite a few of these every year.  Got a bunch in the back room I'm priming now just in case I get any Christmas orders.

For painting I use zinser primer  sand that smooth after it dries Then a solid coat or two of my base coat. (1 coat on the frame and underside and 2 on the top surface.  Tape out the design. run another light coat of your base color along the edges of the tape. This will keep your top colors from bleeding under the tape. 2 coats of the top colors.

Regarding finish - - - flat or gloss ? ? ? ? ?

I'd rather use flat, but I find the gloss easier to clean.

I'm looking to go gloss

I built a set for a Preacher friend or ours. My wife painted it with exterior latex house paint, then covered it with 4 coats of a water based varnish(Polycrylic)

learn sumpin new every day.

this is the first time I've seen the word "cornhole" used in any context that wasn't  - - - well - - - lets just say colorful.

What kind of wood did you make them out of?

I made a pair for my Son In Law with 3/4" plywood for the tops.  I then sprayed three coats of Rustoleum dark green on the tops. Green because he added vinyl decals of the University Of Iowa football field on the tops.

I can post images of them if you like. For the undersides and legs, exterior grade latex flat black.

Found the images.
