November 24, 201312 yr comment_7339 Since I have a few scraps ofBlack Cherry, Black Walnut, some QSWO, and a few other items.   Would any of the above work as a glue-up into a cutting board?Narrow strips for a glue up? ( 4/4 by 4/4 )What finish works on a cutting board? Would it need a groove arounf the edge?   This will be just a simple one, might get it done for a Turkey to sit on???Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use... Report
November 24, 201312 yr comment_7346 The cherry and walnut will work fine. The oak is not the best wood for cutting boards. Maple is a much better choice is you can track some down. Grooves are not necessary for most. Grooves are designed to act as a moat for the collection of meat juices if the boards being used for carving a turkey, roast, etc. As for finish, straight mineral oil works great and is the easiest and cheapest to use. Just pick up a bottle at your local Wal-Mart pharmacy for less than $2. Wipe it on liberally and let it soak in and then repeat. Once the wood has absorbed all it will, wipe it down with an old towel or t-shirt and let it sit for awhile as it may leach out a bit more oil over the next 24 hours. To clean a cutting board use an antibacterial soap and wipe down and then rinse under running water. Do not completely submerge a cutting board in water. Towel it off and set it aside to air dry completely before putting away. To sanitize a cutting board once dry wipe it down liberally with white vinegar and let air dry. Then reapply mineral oil.Do not cross contaminate a cutting board with meats. Poultry and beef do not mix well so it is best to use a different cutting board for poultry, beef and veggies.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk.' November 25, 201312 yr Author comment_7342 Gluing up in the clamps, two walnut boards, and two cherry one. Might get ripped into strips, flipped around to an almost checkerboard look. Guess when it isn't cutting a roast, one can decide which to play......red...or...black?? Report
