Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners

Featured Replies

Only a little lathe work this week. Mimi has been decorating the house. You know what that means!

I've been working on that Woodcraft Pencil Bookshelf. During the build, I made several slight modifications to fit my equipment and what materials I had on hand.

The original build called for dowels to connect the point and eraser to the pencil body. That required drilling centered holes in the three pieces and having everything line up perfectly. I’m not that good, even though the article provided a jig to drill the holes. Instead, my lathe bed is long enough to allow me to turn a tenon on each end of the pencil body and then I only needed to drill one hole in each short piece. I could do that on the drill press.

Another change was on the eraser. The article called out a piece of PVC electrical conduit for the “ferruleâ€. At the Borg, the shortest piece was 10’ and outrageously priced. The eraser itself as supposed to be a piece of cedar, which I didn’t have. I turned the ferrule and eraser as one piece and then painted the parts.

I turned the pencil points pretty much as the article described.

Completed taper and the “lead†added. I’m going to add some adjustable foot levelers to assure the units sets solidly on the floor in its’ new home.

Everything has been painted although touchup will be needed after the pencil assembly.

Very interesting project Lew. I like it. Hope the grand kids don't see it though. They are at the age where they see it, they want it :).
