December 29, 201312 yr I've been pining away for one of these for a while. I've made several over the years and they all stunk. This one is the BOMB. About 800 feet of #24 gauge enamel coated copper wire wound between two boards of ply one was 1/8" thick on a little round turned piece about 2" diameter by 1/4" thick. I clamped it on my lathe attached a face plate to the other end of the head stock and attached a handle to that and manually wound it. Took maybe half an hour. Then I installed a switch a power cord and a terminal block to hook things to and VIOLA When I Run my calipers pliers whatever across it it buzzes mightily and demagnetizes my tools.  The pic is pre-glue up I'm just try fitting. You can see the construction from the side where I have not got the fourth mitered side on In the prior efforts I was being cheap with the wire trying to use salvaged stuff. Never had enough and because of that I tried various tricks to limit the voltage like putting a light bulb in the circuit lower watt bulbs forced it to draw less power . This one has maybe a thousand windings and it doesn't even get warm when hooked up to 120 VAC.
December 29, 201312 yr I can't count the number of times I used an "open" version of one of these to demagnetize those old monstrous color TV pictures tubes. Mine all had momentary (hold for on) switches. Wouldn't wanted to lay one on a customers carpet and forget to turn it off!! December 30, 201312 yr I remember a guy coming to our house regular to run it when we got our first color tv. I thought he came sometimes just to watch Bonanza since it was in color. December 30, 201312 yr Author The actual ring on this is a quarter inch thick dish of windings about 6.5 inches in diameter. The copper wire was $19 on the Flea bayfree shipping I always like free shippingI can't tell you how mind bendingly annoying it is to have steel filings and chips adhering to your measuring tools. It's one of the reasons I avoid magnets in my shop. I work metals often enough that there's always chips and filings.
December 30, 201312 yr To demagnetize, do you just place the tool on the flat surface or must it be put into the hole? Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
December 30, 201312 yr Author oh the hole was how I held it on the lathe and clamped the center mandtil to the pieces of ply. Now it's just decorative.Run the steel piece across the surface and Presto Chango Abracadabra and POOF the magnet fairy grants your wish.
