Student Luke Grant's Winning Essay Wins $1,000 For North Adams, MA, School

IRVINE, California – January 11, 2013 – Laguna Tools is proud to announce the winner of its 2013

CNC

School Contest. The contest, open to all high school, college and university students enrolled in a diploma or degree program, invited brief essays on the type of product they would make with a Laguna Tools computer numerical control (

CNC

) machine.

The winning essay, chosen from several hundred entries, was submitted by Luke Grant, a senior at the North Adams, Massachusetts, Drury High School. His essay centered on his desire to create molds that could be used to shape fiberglass or carbon fiber into body panels for an entry in the Tour De Sol solar power vehicle rally.

Luke's teacher Keith tells the story of what led up to the award. "I share articles from Woodworking News with my class, such as the one about the Laguna Tools contest. I was gratified when Luke volunteered to enter the competition. Win or lose, I thought it would be a good experience for him. But when we received the email that said we had won, I was ecstatic for him and our school. I'm looking forward to February's School Committee Agenda, where Luke can receive the further congratulations he has earned." Luke himself added, "I really wasn't expecting to win. I just saw entering the contest as a way to use some of what I've learned in Advanced Placement Language Arts. When we received the email, every- one clapped. They even bought me pizza for lunch."

Catherine Helshoj, Laguna Tools Vice President commented, "We're proud and happy to make the award to Luke, Keith and Drury High School. The woodworking classes at Drury High School participate every year in community service learning projects. I'm told they'll use the award to fix some shop equipment that had been idled by lack of repair funds."
