January 18, 201412 yr Found a early model Stanley #40 scrub plane. Don't know why I need it but for $5 I couldn't pass it up Round Barn WoodCrafts, Plymouth WIroundbarnwoodcrafts@hotmail.com
January 18, 201412 yr Nice find John, and a great price too. Looks like if you clean it up, would make a good user. Looks like the rust hunter flu is getting around . Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

January 18, 201412 yr Lucky find, sir. Old scrubs are harder to find in the wild than say a jack or smooth plane. I have many vintage planes but could never find a reasonably priced scrub (I paid $140 for a new premium version). Unless you are into hand tool woodworking, you probably won't get much use out of it. I use mine to take heavy cuts off the width of a board when sizing pieces. You can strike a line and work to it fairly quickly then get to final width with a longer plane. Properly set up, you can take shavings of 1/8" or better in straight grained wood.Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking

January 18, 201412 yr Author I had to go back and buy another. Stanley #9 (I think) block plane. I can't wait to get them home and put them to use.Round Barn WoodCrafts, Plymouth WIroundbarnwoodcrafts@hotmail.com
January 18, 201412 yr It is in fact a 9 1/2 block plane. I own a couple myself and they are excellent users if tuned up properly. For information on Stanley planes, check out Patrick Edwards "blood and gore". He goes over every plane ever produced by Stanley from the #1 to #608. January 18, 201412 yr Very nice John. You are hook now, it only takes going back once. I read an article about a guy that had 10,000 tools in his collection. When asked how he got started he replied, "I bought one, then another and it kept going." Best of luck!
