I got this really cool old hand grinder last weekend. It was like a lot of the old iron tools, froze and would not turn. Not to worry, just put plenty of penetrating oil on it and let it sit for a while and you will get it.

This one was frozen on the shaft. I could get the big gears to rock back and forth but the gear on the end of the shaft with the grinding stone would not budge. After some oil and patience, I got the stone off and the shaft out and all cleaned up. Well actually the shaft was cleaned up better than I was. For some reason I had penetrating oil all over me.

I started putting the shaft back in and slid the grinding stone back on the other end. As I was putting the pin in to hold the stone, all of the oil on my hands and the fact that now the gears would turn and it all moved at once and .....

Well it hit the ground and of course it was on a mat but had to hit just right.

Cracked the grinding stone into three pieces. For just a moment I think I was speaking in tongues.

Pretty sure this was the original stone.

Well I will be looking to see if I can find a 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 7/8" grinder stone. Really wish I could find a period correct one, but I just don't see that happening.

I guess as hard as you try to preserver these old things, sometimes accidents happen.

I put it down, spoke over it and went in the house.....

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the stone. Look hard enough you never know what you may find though.
