February 5, 201412 yr Today was supposed to be my second day subbing in the Electronics Technology class but we awoke to this-   About 2" of sleet and around .25" of ice. It could have been a lot worse! Broke out the snowblower for the second time in a week. This stuff was just too heavy and packed too hard to manage with a shovel. Looks like the school year is going into extra innings this year!  Anyway, I did get the poly on all of the rolling pin holders this week a cleaned up the shop in anticipation for the bunk beds project but this weather will delay that somewhat. So, to stay busy, I am working on a sled to cut angled pieces for segmented turnings. Cap'n Eddie has a nice little video for making the sled- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it64J6UB0XM. I took a few liberties on mine. Specifically, I used metal runners and borrowed an idea from Frank Howarth on how to place the plywood sled base for greater material support- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGpD-ZNjZ4I His miter sled will be my next makeover!  My sled-    It seems like every sled I build ends up getting pushed farther and farther into the saw blade over time. To prevent this, I am adding stops to the sleds.  It's just a large headed bolt threaded into the side of the cast iron extension and then a wood block glued to the underside of the sled. So far it seems to work well.  Right now, I am fine tuning the stop for a 16 piece segmented ring. That's an angle of 11.25°. My first setting was really off so to save some waste, I'm re-cutting the pieces for the second test. My goal is to make one of those kitchen spoon holders I posted a couple of weeks ago from Woodturners On Line.  Safe Turning and another shout out to my Brother Nate Meadows- Get Well Buddy!   Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
February 6, 201412 yr Excellent Lew! First off you're weather looks petty danged interesting. Secondly I do not know how you guys manage working in those cold shops like that. I love jigs and table saw sleds and anything home made like thus. I have watched you make some incredible jigs and such Lew and each one you put your own twist on it only to improve it further. Thanks for sharing Lew.I appreciate the work you are doing here. And you bet big shout out to I'll Nate! Even though the photo was of him in the hospital it was great to see a recent image of our buddy. Love ya Nate!
February 6, 201412 yr Great ideas Lew. I love the stop for the sled. I am sure glad so far we have missed most of that type of weather. When it gets like that is when I have to be at work so I like it when we don't get it.
