Makita ROS Hook and Loop Pad Alternative (Question)

Featured Replies

My hook and loop pad is done in, it won't hold paper anymore, does anyone know of an alternative to purchasing the hook and loop pad for 30 bucks?

That is almost half the cost of my sander! I Have the BO5030 Makita ROS.

I thought someone on here had a fix for that, like grinding off the hook pad surface and retrofitting it would something else?

Thanks guys

Check with Home Dept/Lowes as they sell generic replacement pads for some of the major brands. I have a Milwaukee ROS so I was out of luck but got a decent price online so I bought 2. They should also sell a generic repair kit which comes with just the hook and loop material that you peel off the old hook and loop and then glue the new on.

Here is a link to Home Depot for online purchase of a full replacement pad for your Makita for $20 + shipping.

My PC, and Rigid sanders both quit holding after not a lot of use, either.

Went back to stick on paper.

I'd buy the stick on pads for the Makita and the PC. Don't know a method to grind the hooks and still maintain flatness. Can you peel it off?

Was going to suggest Home Depot but it looks like someone has. I was also thinking if you could get the pad off, and attatch velcro to the base that is might work. Not sure how the base is made though. My ROS is a dewalt and has a plastic looking base on it so I would be leary of trying it on that. If it is metal, you could probably carefully scrape it off with a razor blade and clean it up with mineral spirits for the remaining glue. A lot of work when you can get one for $16 plus shipping though.

I have one of the rigid sanders. They came with a lifetime warranty, I called them, they sent me the new pad, and the metal backing free with quick shipping.

Thanks guys for all the great tips, looks like a replacement pad is the way to go, I like the idea of the PSA pad for my sander, and they are pretty danged inexpensive at the site Lew shot to us.

Wayne, I don't know about peeling it off, I could try, got nothing to lose right!

Thanks Allen, Gene, Lew and Wayne, thanks again,

My only problem with PSA discs is that a lot of times, especially for smaller projects, you put one on the sander, do the sanding, but the paper is far from "used up". After removing the disc, it never really sticks very well the next time. Some discs don't even come with a peel off backing (Mirka)- so where do you store a used disk so it won't get dusty on the sticky side.

I seem to go thru a lot more of the PSA discs for this reason. I never really figured if the lower cost of PSA +waste was equal to the higher cost of the hook and loop.

Just my 2¢

Thanks, Gene! I use those freezer bags for everything else but for some reason I never thought of that. Old timers disease, I guess. I have some of the 3M stuff, too.

just spitballing here but - - - - -  can't you go to a fabric shop or go online and buy a nice wide piece of velcro and just apply that with  some contact adhesive after removing the factory loop?

Mind you, I've never so much as held one of those sanders in my hand so  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

That's not a bad idea Cliff, those pads can heat up pretty good though around the edges, and contact adhesive tends to melt with warmth, but that is something to consider.
